Phuket Shrew here! Devastation around the coast has been amazing - fortunately we live far enough away - but although the tremor itself was pretty scary no one was prepared for what was to follow. I guess you guys have been following it all on TV. We opened up the school where I work for 'refugees' (actually spent a good deal of last night cooking for them!) - Some really amazing stories of escape - and some not so lucky ones. The true extent will only become clearer in the days to come as bodies begin to be washed up on the beaches - truly horrific. Some friends/teachers/students still unaccounted for. The waves hit at about 10 am - at that time Patong beach would have been fairly busy and looking at the scale of devastation it is difficult to comprehend how many must have been simply washed away and/or battered to death. Here's a link to a site created by one of my students: auth.gehirn.org.uk/index.php/Main_PageIt's early days yet - but there are a few pics on there taken by another student. Gary Peters seems to be a good choice - but must be given time. Come on you Shrews.

Take care mate , it truely must have been an incredibly frightening experience. My nephew is there for a month which initially caused a concern at home but he has since telephoned his gran to declare himself safe.

My parents, sister, godmother etc... are out there at the moment. Were to be in Hydrobad (sp?)for a while attending a wedding(dont know how long) and then supposed to be traveling about a bit, dont know where, but they do have a lot of friends in the south east of India. Havent herd anything from them since they arrived in India a week ago, which is mildly strange as they all phones and had promissed to text/email... Having said that I'd have thought I'd have herd if anything had happened

I would not worry too much Rob.
My Dad 'winters' in Goa and for one his UK mobile will not work in India.
As for the internet out there it is a joke. The electric never stays on for more than an hour without some break in service so his emails tend to be 'Hi,Everything is fine'
Hyderabad is well inland by the way.

It was pretty worrying when Shropshire had that quake a couple of years back but the power of this one was hundreds of times worse. I drea to think what it must have been like to have experienced any of that.

I am relieved that Murray is going to spend the next 7 months in Bangkok and not the devastated Phuket region.

When I posted about this when the news first broke on the BBC site there was suspected to be 3,200 deaths. On a lighter note, it seems that I have been mispronouncing Phuket for some years.
