Rats stood loyally by the side of Redmile and Artell when we were conceading more goals than we were scoring, did not take any notice of the fans anger at their performances ....and he still carnt understand what went wrong..Try remembering the Rushden game away and i think many people remember.

Cheers Rob, nice to see someone agrees with me ;D , but whats with the almost! If only all games were decided on pens, we'd be top of the league! Unfortunately our performances over the last few months bar a half here and a half there would not be good enough to get us into the top half (at most) in the 3rd. Credit to Jimmy though, hes put together a solid if unspectacular side, lucky we didnt sack him mid season

Ratcliffe wasn't that bad, we've had much worse than him. He doesn't compare to the one that promised everything and spent loads, which we've only just really recovered from, and got us religated from the (old) 2nd.
I do know his name but have sworn never never to use it again.

As I said - who gives a flyin flip. We have to leave the past behind. I've been bitter for sveneteen years becos of McNeill - who was a flipin awful manager apart from the first six month - it get you know where.
Here and now is where it matters.
Football League - look at it!!!!

I can never 'hate' a person because they failed at a job. Ratcliffe failed, and made some terrible mistakes, which have in fact hurt him personally more than it's hurt me.
I'll forgive him the lot because we've bounced back up but I realise that the majority can't. It's in our human nature that we're all different.
Had we been relegated in 2001 rather than 2004, the future would have been far far bleaker. No money, new ground or crowds over 3,000. Fact.
But as AdeP says, lets draw a line under it. I'll be remembering Rats as a guy who gave me my favourite ever Shrewsbury Town moment, who gave some excellent interviews but who had a disastrous last season in charge. And also, one of the best British defenders to ever live.

Completely agree Mr Plim!
Time to let it go. I was pleased that he was pleased that we went up, if you know what I mean

And don’t say Jake didn’t have the money cos he did, I think if you compare the wage bills of JK and KR you'll find that statement to be utter b******s.

Hate is to strong an emotion to use to describe my feelings for Ratcliffe. I was not a fan of his when he was here and i care little for his sentiments now. It's been mentioned earlier, lets all move on. One thing i will take welshshrew to task with is that i don't honestly believe that it hurt him as much as us. It might have done momentarily but in effect it was only his professional pride that a hit. He wasn't hurting at Dagenham, Forest green , Leigh etc. He was earning a nice little sum from his cosy job in the media which would still have occurred even if we had lost at the brittannia.

I'd be grateful if you stopped taking me to task but instead noted that you 'have a slightly different viewpoint'......

I suspect that I am older than quite a few of you on here and it's right to say 'move on'. We did have some good times when KR was manager - and yes we did have some bl..dy awful ones.
However, I for one have enjoyed this last season - even Dover on Sunday afternoon, Dagenham (every team surely has to have one bad day each season - and that's better than 4 or 5 like last season), and everywhere else I have been. It was good to go to new grounds, meet new people, and see what the Conference is like.
We can now speak with some authority on the lower league without sounding patronising, we can appreciate how people enjoy their football and support their teams to the bitter end, we can truly tell everyone how awful the refs are. Yes, all in all, I feel that it has been good experience for me. But it is now time to move on again, put relegation behind us, look to the future with THIS manager, THIS team, and now the practically certain future of a New Meadow (I'm always cautious!)
Come on lads, let the past go - I promise you will feel better for it.

On Sunday 16th May 2004, we got back to the FL. As RW said ' it was closure for what happened before'. Nuff said!!!!!!!! I could not have said it any better myself and my feelings towards Ratcliffe will remain from this point private.

He couldn't resist pointing out in the paper that Jimmy had been allowed a bigger staff than he had, and that he had a kit man. There's still bitterness there

Interesting the way threads develop sometimes- I had expected my comments would have led to a discussion of Ratcliffe the man, not Ratcliffe the manager- no doubt he lost the plot as a manager and it seems that some fans will always hate him for that- personally I have no problems with him as a person. But it just goes to show- who would be a football manager eh

I see we have the usual mix of "hang him" and "leave him alone" going on! I think Rats is above all, human - like the rest of us. Clearly he will not be remembered as a great Manager. But, he did give us epic wins vs Everton, Crewe, Port Vale and (in his first full season) showed some promise. I don't think we can forget that his squad - who were able to raise themselves for the big matches above, failed dismally in so many of the bread and butter games.
Many "once great" managers have endured huge peaks and troughs in their careers - George Burley, Peter Reid, Brian Clough? Kev is just one more ex-player who deserved a try. Nice bloke, great defender, failed manager.

We're on a springboard going up. Lets leave excess baggage behind, and just learn from experience, it all means nowt now. We're on a high, lets carry it forward and make a new season out of our success of this last one. Holding onto things leaves bitterness, so lets spring up as high as we can!
