At tonight's Council meeting the Council voted not to open up negotiations with STFC/Alaska about the purchase of Gay Meadow.
A motion, supported en bloc by the Conservative group, which stipulated that STFC/Alaska should be merely "thanked" for their offer was carried.
The motion was termed in such a way that it was hinted that they might return to the idea if Government approval was given to the Tesco purchase of the livestock market. However, STFC/Alaska stated in their offer that they wanted a decision from the Council by 31 December 2003 and if they remain firm on this it is unlikely that any further negotiations will take place.
STFC/Alaska now intend to push ahead with financing the new stadium by offering Gay Meadow for residential development.
While the Council's decision was not crucial to the New Meadow project, it was decisive about whether Gay Meadow would be the site of a new theatre. Tonight's decision would now appear to rule out a theatre on the Gay Meadow. Indeed it would also appear that a new theatre for Shrewsbury will now not happen on any site.

No suprise there really The covenant issue will take an awful lot of sorting if there's to be a cat in hell's chance of a residential development at Gay Meadow

Absolutely disgusted, and as for the Tory party in Shrewsbury - I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN!
The whole of Shrewsbury will lose what would have been a massive boost for the town.
I’m that mad I may even organise some kind of demo, they were very keen to spend 10 million on new sw*nky offices for the pen pushers but when it comes to giving something of value back to the town that would have had major benefits we get sorry but no thanks.
Well f**k the lot of em im well disillusioned now.

I think that all STFC supporters groups etc... should try and push for a referendum on this issue...AND FAST !
THE CHOICE OF HAVING HOUSING OR A NEW THEATRE IS A CLEAR ONE, AND SHOULD BE PUT TO THE PEOPLE FOR A DEMOCRATIC VOTE.
These councilors are supposed to represent the publics views and i would guess that the majority of people in Shrewsbury would like to see the Gay Meadow used for a new theatre instead of housing.
Does anyone know how we could get the idea raised at a council meeting and put to a vote?

Patience people, the covenant is only on the Pitch according to Kieth Sayfritz one acre, so if this area was left as open space, gardens for resident and public use? Plus There might be another offer in the pipeline for the GM all is not lost except for a theatre which would have been flamin brill

its no good moaning about the local tories, they've always been the same. one alternative i havn't heard mentioned from any of the supporter groups so far has been the possibility of getting someone to stand as a one issue candidate just like charlton fans did when they wanted to return to the Valley.

Bugger... although it was totally expected.
We need to do something about it because the current council do not appear to want it to happen... certainly in their lifetime anyway.
Agree 100% with Kickin's point about the Council HQs at Frankwell completely.

An interesting fact out of tonights meeting is that £22 million of the money accrued from the sale of the council houses is not available to be spent as the council have allocated it for investment only. The interest gained from the £22 million is intended to help keep council tax at a lower rate. This means there is currently less than £30 million available and a number conservative councillors felt they had insufficient funds to buy Gay Meadow and build a Theatre. The theatre in Shrewsbury is unlikely to happen .

That bunch of Tory tossers have delayed the Gay Meadow development, with their "pie in the sky" land swap schemes, which always sounded somewhat shady, by at least 6 months. The least we should expect now, should be the speedy lifting of the covenant, and a fast-track processing of the planning application on the Meadow. Let's remember at election time, the Tories have kicked us, so let's kick them - OUT.

Well i have made my mind up after tonight...
Im going to launch a web site soon showing just how Smart Shrewsbury really is...Smart Shrewsbury - More like Smart to leave Shrewsbury.
Any of you lot any good with search engine optimisation as i want this site to be as close to the top when "SHREWSBURY" is searched for on the net?
This town is going downhill fast, god only knows why people even bother to visit us any more.

FFS,
"This town is going downhill fast, god only knows why people even bother to visit us any more. "
Most people who visit are not interested in the football club, they are mainly tourist wanting to look around an old town.
Shrewsbury can survive with or without a football club, STFC is not bigger than than the Town itself.

errrrm - This is not just about the Football club in my eyes, the whole town is degenerating IMHO.
The streets are filthy, our heritage is neglected etc...etc...etc
Have you actually spent a day walking around Shrewsbury and looking at how bad it currently looks? last summer i walked around with my camera and struck me what a dump Shrewsbury is starting to become, we are going backwards in every department and i think that issues need to be highlited and soon.
In my eyes, a new theatre alongside the river would have been to shrewsbury what the opera house is to Sydney.
We have to many old timers who are scared of making the decisions that will move this town forward.
Your right about the football club not being bigger then the town but you would be hard pressed to find anything else in the town that gets a bigger amount of support than STFC from actual townsfolk.

Yeh and there is not much to keep the tourists Quest centre etc closed nothing to really to interest families, nothing to do in the evening apart from go to the cinema (keeps me in a job) though the same films show at every multiplex across the country or bowling Its also the little things that will keep people coming back Apart from cafe uno is there anywhere else the old town seeking tourists can go and sit in the summer just to have a coffee and a cake with a picturesque view of the river?

I thought the new theatre as going on the old telephone exchange on Raven Meadows?
As for the Shrewsbury Quest - It's now HQ of Shropshire Wildlife Trust and well worth a visit!

"I thought the new theatre as going on the old telephone exchange on Raven Meadows?"
The town center is becoming a huge car park and the site in question is ....you guessed it - becoming a new surface car park.
Who is the new car park for? You guessed right again...SABC
Do SABC actually ever spend money for the benifit of the people of Shrewsbury or is it only when they can see something in it for them?
Like a £1.00 parking fee for example!

The Telephone House site on Smithfield Road has apparently been committed to car parking for the next three years. This means that a theatre is ruled out on that site for that period.
Don't expect any curtain calls in Shrewsbury in the near future - if ever!

Now my visits are far too fleeting, however I agree with your observations Kickin'. One day, when the town has been dragged kicking (no pun intended) and screaming into the 21st Century, I'd love to move back. Wont be holding my breath mind. Merry Christmas one & all.

I am very dissapointed as Shakey says people dont realise the value of a footbal club to the town This scheme appears to be excellent, to give a win to the football club and a win to the community The politicians unfortunately appear to lack the vision to see things not as they are but as they could be We need to keep the pressure on with elections getting nearer The idea of an independant candidate was suggested by Hereford United fans to put pressure on their local council I dont think one ever stood (where is Full of Bull when you need him!)but the threat of it did help put pressure on councillors and got the supporters into meetings with the council leaders and others
ps I still feel its a great town but this would make it so much better!

As someone who lives on Sutton Road I am pretty damn sure that the preference for residents would be sporting facilities around the New Meadow rather than a large number of houses! If this had been explained as a possible outcome when the resident's views were collected there would've been a far more positive response to the New Meadow scheme.

The New Meadow scheme won't have houses in sutton, the houses will be built on NM land by the river
An interesting point though, Colchester United just had planning permission for a new ground, with a development of 1500 new homes on the same site which paid for the stadium
