League to look into Chester wage bill Dec 5 2003
Report By Neil Turner Daily Post
CHESTER City are one of a number of Nationwide Conference clubs who have been contacted by the League regarding their 'excessive wage bill.'
The Conference has imposed a salary-capping system this season, which is similar to the one currently in operation in rugby league.
The ruling means that clubs can only operate with a wage bill which is within their turnover, and a Conference sub-committee which monitors this system is of the opinion that Chester City and certain other clubs are infringing the rule.
City chairman Stephen Vaughan said last night: "I didn't agree to this budget proposal when it was first muted, but we have to abide by the rules of the majority. "The ruling states that our play-ing budgets must be within the guidelines that are set out in the Conference Directory."
Vaughan continued: "I am annoyed that somebody at the Conference appears to have leaked these findings and equally annoyed that Chester City appears to have been singled out. Are they trying to penalise success I wonder?
"The issue, and our objection to it, is based on the fact that we have certain players on three-year contracts, which were agreed prior to this ruling being imposed, which makes the whole current procedure ridiculous. What do people expect us to do, renege on contracts?"
Chester are next in action tomorrow afternoon, when they travel across the Pennines to face Halifax Town in a Conference fixture.
Chester, who are the league leaders, will be aiming to extend their current unbeaten record to 18 matches.
