Yup we won and we're in the next round.
But my god we're a boring football team. It seems to take an eternity for us to move from midfield to attack.
Plus points are that the defence is holding out strong and that Howie is fantastic - he made three crucial saves from long range efforts today.
I thought Darby did ok but not sure if he'll ever score again.

He cannot just sit on defenders shoulders anymore as by the time the ball arrives he has the midfield on him as well. Interesting to see the team next Saturday.....

They say it's the sign of a good football team tht plays badly and still wins one nil
Surely it's the sign of a poor supporter who moans at the result

No one moaned at the result, just the performance! Don't think there are many (if any) poor supporters on this board!!

Certainly wouldn't moan at that result - the result was top notch. Overall we created the most clear cut chances but if I was an Alty fan I'd be dissapointed - I thought they deserved a draw.
We are extremely boring though and at times it's painful to watch. Good delivery to both attacker's feet today but who was there to support them? For the vast majority of times no one.
I'm not Ryan Lowe's biggest fan but he has to start next week - Kevin Street is NOT a winger. Ryan Lowe isn't either but he gives more to the side than Street in that position and will always get the side goals too.
On the brighter side - Darren Tinson was awesome today. Man of the match for us by a considerable distance.

I'm sorry to disagree with you Peter but there was so much negativity behind the goal today that it does not exactly inspire the players. Who boos Town off at half time when they are not winning?? Why not stay and applaude the team when they win??
Don't think there are many poor supporters on this board?Ok I apologise if this caused offense but the point I wanted to make is that we need to win matches and if that means winning ugly then fine by me .
Apologies if I upset anyone

Wasn't disagreeing with you at all, sorry if my post was mis-leading. When I read your post I thought you were talking about people on here moaning about results not those at the game, sorry about that Agree with what you say about the booing though, I know it wasn't exactly thrill a minute stuff but the booing was very unjustified. Like you said, its all about results not performances, I'm sure most fans would happily take promotion after scraping 1-0 wins every week!

I didn't boo at half time, I clapped the team at the end and am pleased we won. However I feel that we were incredibly lucky today to win and the football we played at times would not look out of place in a supporters game (ok - it wasn't that good )

I thought we dragged Altrincham down to our level quite well. lets face it, if come the end of May Town are back in the FL plus an FA Trophy in the cabinet aswell but not essential I shalt complain.

if we play poorly but win people accept it
but when we don't win, then the venom unleashed is really quite strong
playing boring football is only acceptable as long as it is successful, but the crowd's reaction to Accrington game at half time shows some are not prepared to fail in this way

For boring read predictable- we have many striker options but few attacking options it seems- we are relying too much on Sammy opening up defences- Darby could not unlock his front door at the moment. Cramb and Banim are inventive players and would release Luke or create opportunities for themselves- and we are missing Tolley's forward runs

I think we really need to start getting a bit 'tasty' on the field and start stamping our authority on games because, for me, there is to much pretty football being played by STFC at the moment. However I would have taken 0-1 at the start of the game yesterday so it really is only knit-picking but nevertheless we need to add another dimension to our game.
I'm talking about strong challanges, roughing up a few players and start mixing it up because at times the opposing teams do get the physical edge on us.
A Stuart Talbot type player is the kind of player we need...

I agree we need to be stronger in the midfield and establish a platform to attack. I was at alty yesterday and i accept the result against a strong well managed outfit who to be fair wihout howie may well have scored on three occasions. What i struggle with is poor set peices, giving the ball away cheaply and having apart from aiston an ineffective midfield. I also object to the parking ticket i got even though the one purchased was clearly displayed?

i think this is probably just me but i would personally rather see great entertaining good football even if it means stayin down insted of boring long ball just to get up.obviuosly i would want both but if i had a choice of
1)shrewsbury in div three playing boring 1-nil wins
OR
2)shrewsbury in confrence winning or lossing 3-2
i would much prefer option 2

Hereford and Chester seem to be capable of winning 4-1 or 5-2 every other week it seems. We are not. It's time to be a bit more cavalier away from home. We are better than these teams, it's time to try showing it. If we lose the odd game, so what, we're doing that anyway.
How about Rodgers and Banim playing off either of the big fellas, with Sammy roaming and Jamie and Dave anchoring? The gaps down the flanks might encourage the full backs to get forward a bit too. They'd leave gaps, I know, but I'd like the odd 5-3. Not against Chester or someone like that, but I'd love to see Jimmy give it a crack against Tamworth etc, maybe just once, see what we get. I know this is more than a little tactically dubious, but a bit more entertaining. A pipe dream, but hey.

A couple of observations:- Will Darby ever score again? Yep. In front of 18k at Stoke in our biggest game of the season. Missing Tolley’s forward runs? Were we really that bad?
