Attended by: Sean Fernyhough (Blue and Amber Message Board & CHAIR) Roger Groves (Blue and Amber Message Board), Sib Hayes (OSC & Club Shop), Ian Jones (A Large Scotch & SUFAN), Mary Miller (ISC), Ade Plimmer (A Large Scotch & SUFAN), Keith Sayfritz (Director – STFC), Chris Smith (Away Travel Club & Super Blues), Mal Whitrick (Director –STFC), Tim Williams (Away Supporters Football Club).
1. Apologies
Bill Wingrove
2. Minutes from the last meeting
Two minor errors pointed out that have been corrected for the record. Otherwise agreed.
3. Commercial developments in the last quarter
Issue of larger supporter’s bar had been discussed at the last Commercial Group meeting and at an open meeting held by the OSC. Mal Whitrick had considered these productive. Mal would be looking into plans to increase the capacity of the supporters bar from that previously disclosed.
Alternative uses at the new stadium site outside of match days were briefly discussed. Keith Sayfritz and Mal said this issue would be better addressed when a start date for the new stadium was announced. It could be likely that the Commercial Group and other fans Groups would be asked for a lot of input into this once the start date is announced.
4. Home Kit competition
Votes on five new kit designs started after the Orient game and would finish by the Kidderminster game on the 19th February. An idea that the new kit could be ready for the players to wear for the last home game of the season was unlikely in the time allowed and would not be feasible given the change in shirt sponsorship between the current and future home kit. Aim was that kit would be launched at the summer Open Day.
5. Alternative Kit suppliers
Mal and Sib Hayes explained four major suppliers had been contacted by the Club. Sib said she had spoken to Nike several times but was still waiting for a sample shirt. At the moment Nike doesn’t produce a shirt with amber in and are unlikely to for the next few years. Umbro and Diadora would be getting back to Club but there had been some problems with the latter. No response had come back from Admiral.
Primary concern was that major suppliers would not supply a kit with amber or be able make a bespoke kit as being voted on at the moment. Sib said the Club had experience lack of availability and after sales when a bigger supplier had been used before. The benefits of a major supplier was seen to be better and more saleable leisurewear range and the quality of the shirt which Sean Fernyhough demonstrated in terms of the finishing between an STFC shirt and Southend shirt made by Nike. ACTION POINT - Mal would be speak to MG Sportswear and show them the Southend shirt to see if they improve the quality of their shirts.
Sib stated that the Club has a good working relationship with MG Sportswear and was flexible to her requests. If people were concerned with the MG Sportswear logo this could be removed completely or a Club brand logo could be introduced instead e.g. “ShrewsSports” but still manufactured by MG.
With the new kit being the last one to appear at the Gay Meadow it was considered that there was the potential to do a special or limited edition shirt to commemorate this fact similar to the “Conference Play Final 2004” type on the away shirt that was on sale in May 2004. Dependant on the start date for the new stadium something along the lines of “Gay Meadow 1910 – 2006” could be used.
6. Matchday and kit sponsorship
Ade Plimmer and Sean fed back some negative comments from sponsors regarding their sponsorship. ACTION POINT - It was agreed that Mal would contact both sponsors to hear their concerns.
7. Matchday Programme
Keith and Mal stated previous concerns that not enough Matchday Programmes were being sold. Issues were raised that distribution of programmes was poor, there where not enough sellers, sellers were not prominent enough, and the positioning of sellers could be improved. There are still stories of fans being unable to purchase programmes conveniently. All these points need to be considered as a means of boosting sales. ACTION POINT – Mal would be speaking to Kevin Davies about these issues at the Kidderminster game on Saturday 19th February.
8. Club Badge
Sean wanted to raise the issue of whether the current Club badge or any of its previous incarnations were copyrighted in the ownership of the Club. A third party had considered doing this on a badge from the 1980’s as part of retro shirt sales. ACTION POINT - In the first instance Sib would check with Judy Shone which Badges the Club had a copyright on.
9. Gay meadow memorabilia and mementoes
Sib showed the meeting examples of grass based souvenirs sold by QPR. Limited edition photographs/painting was another possibility. ACTION POINT – All to think of good ideas of what would be in demand from fans and report to next meeting.
10. Another other Business
Ade wanted to thank everyone would had assisted in the Supporters Trust that would now be set up following recent mandate. The next Step would be get volunteers for the Steering Group. Keith stated that he wanted the Supporters Trust to work with the Club.
11. Date of next meeting.
May 2005 – date and time to be agreed.
