Lead of 100 plus would be nice, then short blast at their second innings after tea and who knows .

Shame Thorpe and Freddy went in quick succession. It's still odds on a draw but if we can get 200 or so ahead within the first hour of play tomorrow then we have half a chance of getting the win.

England are having another good day- they seemed to have ensured that SA wont win the game and if they are 200 ahead by the close, then who knows. Ashley Giles has got to be one of the most improved players in the game: hes gone from irratic spin bowler to consistent, wicket taking spin bowler who often chips in with valuable runs down the order

I had to laugh at David Lloyd. He was talking about a best world x1, named the first 6 whilst saying that the sixth man was the wickie, then he said "well we know who's going to be the spinner now", "but its all bollox anyway" he said

The relative success of the England cricket team recently is interesting. I certainly enjoy watching it, not just for the style of play but for the feeling that the eleven men out there represent me, in that they are like people I know and meet in every day to day life. Decent-ish unflashy small town young men from the home counties and provinces.
Compare and contrast with the football team. OK there is the racial angle, but even if the team was formed of Terry, Woodgate, Beattie, Sutton etc. I still don't think I could relate to them. Too much money, too arrogant, too yobbish. I'll watch the Rugby (Union or League) sooner than that bunch these days.
Wisden Cricket Monthly published a controversial article about ten years ago which questioned the performance of black/asian and white imports in the England side, and the damaging effect on team morale with often five or six such mercaneries in the side. Yet the author of the articel, Robert Henderson, has been vindicated by recent performances. Only the Aussie Jones is now a questionable selection and he is none too popular with the fans who'd rather have Chris Read.
Something for you all to consider anyway, unless this gets deleted and I get banned again.

Sorry to disappoint you Cynical but I think you will find Jonathan Woodgate will be announcing his retirement from Football in the very near future due to the tendon injury.

Must have been hell for Cynical when Nasser Hussein was captain.
And I wonder what he thinks about us having an African coach?

And god knows what he made of the team in the late 70's and 80's when there was only 2 or 3 English born players in the entire side.

Perhaps you ought to read his post more closely, thats exactly the point he is making. Only 2 or 3 English born players , really, Botham, Willis, Underwood, Gatting, Boycs, Steele, Old, Knott, Dilley, Gower, Bairstow, Willey, etc etc, I would say that '2 or 3' English born players is a slight exaggeration

SA declare - 44 overs to go, 185 to win. Think of that as a 1 dayer and it's a very reachable total.
