Shropshire Wanderers - FA Cup semi-finalists in 1874-75, losing to Old Etonians at Kennington Oval.
Different times and all that.....
Would have been fun to watch though. I can just see some sort of Boris Johnson lookalike playing in goal for the OE.

I like the sound of the Pontesbury Warriors FC If only there had been a Minsterley Marauders FC. What a local derby that would have been!!

Going forward to the 1930s my Dad played for Cocks Tannery, the tannery was on Barker Street. I have a photo of him in their stylish halved shirts - Blackburn Rovers style.
After the war he played for Wem White Star and Shrewsbury Amateurs. I have a team photo of one of those teams, I don’t know which, posing at Gay Meadow before an amateur cup final.
If I knew how to add photos I’d share them.

I have always wondered why you had a side in Shropshire Wanderers who reached the FA Cup semi-final that didn't continue to be the dominant club in the town (and perhaps there wouldn't be a Shrewsbury Town FC today). I mean they must have been decent enough. I do find all this sort of thing fascinating stuff...👍

If you Google Shropshire Wanderers you will read about their close links with Shrewsbury FC,but it appears that Wanderers had between 30 and 80 members over the years with one dominant person,Charles Hawley. Once he dropped away the club just faded away

Upload your pics onto a free hosting site like this one: imgbb.com/Then link it on here. I think you need to be using the desktop version of this site rather than the mobile version. Pilch will talk you through it.

My earliest memories of football in Shropshire were watching Belle Vue Old Boys in the fifties and early sixties. Home games were played in Sutton Lane near the gypsy encampment. The team was full of well known local characters who were mostly tradesmen you would see in the local pubs. Certain names have stuck in my mind over the years just like the early town players from that era. The goalkeeper I remember as Joe and then there was Reg Seabury and the legend that was Bert Vaughan who played into his fifties. Watching these lads gave me my love of football at the lower level.
