Difficult to see how PH can immediately play 4-4-2 with the players currently available to him - who would play right back for example and we only really have one holding midfielder who has played there regularly of late. With Bowman and Mata offering so little energy and threat (admittedly with poor service) our best bet may to play Bloxham on his own upfront and try to get creative midfielders like Shipley and Bayliss (who needs to return to form) playing off him. For this game only I would go with: Marosi (if fit) Feeney Dunkley Sraha Winchester Kenneh Perry Benning Bayliss Shipley Bloxham Hopefully next week we can sign a right back, a holding midfielder and a striker and then go 4-4-2 for the rest of the season. I've seen 442 mentioned in various places a lot this week. On here, Twitter, Facebook etc. I know we all watch football differently, but did we ever play 442 under Hurst? Certainly in the "miracle season" all I remember is 433 or 4231 or 451, that kind of style. Never 442, but with so many mentioning it perhaps it's me that is confused. I agree 4-4-2 is a bit of a simplification but I do remember mostly a back four with two holding midfielders and Whalley and Rodman wide in midfield. We sometimes played Morris ( or Payne) as lone striker with Nolan in a fairly free role calling the shots behind him. The main point is to get rid of a formation that plays three centre-halves when we dont have great options at wingback and get another midfielder in the team so we can contest the ball further up the pitch. We are conceding so much possession that we cannot keep a clean sheet even playing three (or four) centre-halves.

If it was as simple as switching back to what worked last time then any of us, or Wycherley himself could be head coach. We have a vastly different squad with a number of weaknesses and Hurst will have to react to what we have.
Personally, I think everybody would be better off looking at the job he did and the tactics he used in the season he was brought in as more realistic to what we might see now, than the season where he had a summer to prepare and everything clicked into place.

Have we actually got eleven fit players? That would be a good starting point and then throw the chicken bones and start from there

Is Udoh fit? We’re even more toothless than usual without him.

Is Udoh fit? We’re even more toothless than usual without him. I hope so, but PH won’t risk him unless he’s 100%. More important is the supply from midfield. Bowman certainly, and no doubt Mata and Bloxham, have goals in them if the midfield can actually create a decent number of chances.

I’m one of the sceptics about Hurst coming back. However I will the first one now he is here to give him a chance. Two issues as far as I am concerned, one of those is that he plays players in their best positions. Two he he has to get them to defend properly and pass the ball correctly. First game will be difficult for him. If he gets the players to play to their abilities he has a chance. Proof of the pudding as they say. Strangely enough I think he will sort it.

I recon this is a bit of a free-hit for Hurst. He's came in too late to make any major impact. The biggest impact will be seen from the players i.e. how they react to MTs departure, and how much they want to be in PHs plans.
I do have my worries about the fight left in this team though. A lot of them are out of contract in the summer and there is very little to fight for. Yes avoiding relegation, but that isn't a mountain to climb. And even if we do get relegated, the players leaving aren't going to be bothered that much are they.
I know they are professional players. I have faith in this group, i like them all as people. But getting 90% out of them may be very very difficult.

Chances of OBrien playing tomorrow?
Given that if he does he wont be going anywhere else for the rest of the season having played for Sutton and us.
Or will we not play him and be desperately trying to fooook him off before Wednesday?

Who did you want as manager then??? My whole issue with Hurst was the way he left. His whole attitude in the playoff was I don’t give a s**t about this club I’m off. From that point of view I simply didn’t want him. You have asked how did I want. Anybody but him to be honest. But there are candidates out there who I am sure have the credentials but I could not give you a name. I could put my neck on the line and say Me. I will say this, in the short term I could do a **** site better than Taylor.

Couldn't of been that bad what he done,or upset Roland that much......he wanted him back, and got him🤷....as I said a few days ago.....s**t happens....Hurst wasn't the first, and certainly won't be the last in what he did...simple as......if he fails, and we get relegated....the " we didn't want Hurst back" brigade, will be happy....let's hope it doesn't happen

From memory the other scorers were Wildig, Morgan, Colllins , Jacobsen and the own goal from Langmead.

Really interested to see the look of the team tomorrow. Hurst and Doug have obviously had a few days with them and will have had plenty of footage to watch in the days leading up to joining.

As much as I don't agree with the appointment of Hurst the fact we have someone different from MT has actually got me excited for this match and for the first time in a long time I am actually looking forward to a Salop game.
