www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/05/israel-tells-hamas-to-accept-ceasefire-terms-or-risk-new-onslaught-in-near-futureIsrael tells Hamas to accept ceasefire terms or risk new onslaught ‘in near future’ Netanyahu refuses demands of permanent ceasefire and also moves to shut down Al Jazeera network Senior Israeli officials ramped up pressure on Hamas on Sunday, saying Israel would refuse any permanent end to hostilities and threatening a new onslaught “in the very near future” if the militant organisation did not accept recently proposed terms for a ceasefire. In a televised address, Benjamin Netanyahu once more rejected Hamas’s demands for a definitive end to the war in Gaza, saying that any permanent ceasefire would allow the group to remain in power and pose a continuing threat to Israel. In a move unlikely to help the talks, Netanyahu’s cabinet decided on Sunday to shut down Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel for as long as the war in Gaza continues, claiming the Qatari television network threatens national security. Al Jazeera rejected the accusation as a “dangerous and ridiculous lie” that put its journalists at risk. The network has been critical of Israel’s military operation in Gaza, from where it has reported around the clock throughout the war. It is funded by the Qatari government, which until recently played a key role in ceasefire talks.

Perhaps things have moved on since but my understanding from what has been reported is that Netanyahu is on the brink because October 7th happened on his watch and that he has not been able to bring about the return of the hostages taken that day. From what I recall the actions Israel is taking in Gaza is supported by a majority of Israelis and from across the political spectrum. Like I say though, that was a short time back, things of course move at a pace. And yes, of course there are consequences to actions taken. What we are now seeing are the actions as a consequence of the October 7th attack. Anyhow, why Israel would think Hamas would agree to any ceasefire if Israel still aims to destroy it I'm not really quite sure. What would Hamas gain from that? It could of course perhaps allow the situation to improve somewhat for the people of Gaza but for how long and to what extent? Hamas care little for the people of Gaza (other than as pawns in their political game) and if Israel means to continue to fight Hamas then the people of Gaza will again suffer as a result anyhow. Just to add, talking of actions and consequences has anyone been following the recent protests on US campuses? Bizarre scenes, amongst them some of the most privileged people in the world playing dress up and looking to equate their own position as if under some siege... It's easy to mock the entitled know-nothing student protesters who couldn't find Gaza on a map.

Would hope our universities and authorities would handle "entitled know-nothing students" so much better. In this country those sort of students eventually end up as Prime Minister

Now I was trying to leave the politics out of it and stick to the subject, but you couldn't resist. Since you mention it, the entitled idiot Boris Johnson was at Oxford.

Bear in mind that this originated from talking about the yankie uni students protesting about something they perhaps know little about in their experience and that not all yankie uni students are protesting.

You are again neglecting to mention that only one Tory MP voted 'no' along with 17 abstentions. Are the 147 Tory and 11 Unionist MPs that voted 'yes' not equally culpable? 84 Labour MPs, around a quarter of the PLP, voted against the motion including Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott and John McDonnell.

Frivolous maybe, but Eurovision is kicking off with the inclusion of the Israeli singer. I have a feeling that their entry wasn't kicked out because the organisers feared they would be labelled "antisemitic". Now she's through to the final.
At yesterday's semi final rehearsal there was a lot of booing, when the semi final was televised later some sort of technology was used to supress the boos and the security staff also intervened. Those wanting to protest against Israel being in the competition resorted to waving their phones in the air with a Palestine flag displayed, there were attempts by some to snatch phones off them.
It's all so much less fun in comparison the big love-in Eurovision is meant to be. Now Israel are through to the final things could get nasty.

Frivolous yes but it is a great measure of current relationships between countries and states. Two guarantees; baltic states will vote for each other UK will get slated and thirdly the winning song will be lauded by the BBC.
