The O'Brien saga has made me think about previous Salop signings which have gone badly wrong.
By that, I don't necessarily mean crap players we've signed - there are far too many of those - but players who we paid too much for - either in fees or wages or length of contract.
They either failed to live up to their billing or justified the investment or just didn't want to be here in the first place.
Apart from O'Brien, here are some who immediately spring to mind: John Dungworth, Anthony Sarcevic, Nathan Elder, Sam Cosgrove. I'd also add Pyke despite his heroics on Saturday. (Prepares for incoming from a certain direction.)
Perhaps a bit controversial - Dave Edwards in his second stint.
Any others?

I mentioned him on another thread but Elder, 3 year deal and a decentish fee (at the time), also billed as Holt's replacement!
Darren Simkin who always one I remember people moaning about as we actually paid money for him
Another shambolic signing, not so much for money was Riza, we waited a few months for for the signing to go through because of suspension for something, lot's of hype....about 6 months later he was gone.
O'Brien will definitely go down as one of the worst though, a decent signing, injured straight away and then has a bust up when he returns to fitness.

You don't need a new thread for this topic, you need a new mwssage board.

There was a French player who never played. There has been two (Ousmane Fane & Elliot Grandin) that I'm aware of.

Too many to mention but a couple of players that stick out for leaving shortly after signing due to "personal reasons".
Martin Woods - midfielder who signed for us under Mellon in the summer of '15 and had already buggered back to Scotland by the time the transfer window had shut.
Current Crewe manager Lee Bell who came to us on loan briefly in the Conference.
I'm sure there's more.

Kris Bright was a bit of a farce if the rumour that he was drove to the ground by the manager to sign after our friendly were true.
He kind of had promise but was horrendous, must've played in 10+ different countries now.

There was a French player who never played. The one who came from Oldham? Sidney Schmeltz.

Grandin was the one I was thinking of. It’s scary that there are so many others.

Trevor Birch never lived up to the transfer fee we paid for him.
I think we paid £40k for him, a club record fee at the time.
In context that would see us spending £270k in today's money.

Is it me or are they practically all strikers?

Dave Artell, possibly the worst loan signing we've ever had, was a major part I us going out of the league, a useless slow clogger

Was a decent young prospect when paired with an experienced co defender. Now his partner in the relegation season Matt Redmile I would agree with. That partnership was always destined to fail as there was no experience amongst them. Pity one of the best ever defenders Ratcliffe couldnt see it.

Dan James. Admittedly it was only a loan but we appear to have missed out in a major way when you look at his subsequent career. I suppose his chances may have been limited with Whalley and Rodman performing so well that season.

Surely it has to be Mr Cureton. Scored a ton of goals at every club he played at except for Town.
It was an embarrassment

Thought Nathan Elder was always harshly dealt with. He was cruelly made a scapegoat for the 5-0 drubbing at Dagenham early that season.

Arthur Rowley signed Derek Hines, his former strike partner from Leicester City. Obviously a gift to an old pal, Hines was only 30 but looked and played like he was 20 years older. He retired after 21 games for us, but he scored 8 goals which shows that statistics don’t always tell the truth.
Darren Simpkin was a classic, I remember his home debut with the Riverside looking at each other in disbelief. The only player I’ve seen looking more out of his depth was the son of the Blackburn manager we had on loan.

Moha el Ourachi and George Waring who Mellon signed from Stoke, then we managed to play them away at Charlton before the registrations were completed. Think the FA took pity on us as we got tanked 3-0 on the night, so it was just a slapped wrist rather than a points deduction….

Tyrone Barnett. Peterborough ripped us off by taking £100k from us for him. Absolutely no way Barnett belongs in the same breath as most of the others on this thread. Remember him chipping in with some important goals in that promotion run in and when we were struggling back in League One the following season.

if we examine current players 2 spring to mind
clearly obrien is a car crash that hasn't finished crashing
i still wish i knew the full facts about burgoyne , i'm convinced some meddling from above brought him in , he's probably cost us more points per game than any other player and if he was sams idea it serves him right 😝
overall
kris bright , biggest joke of all time joey banim biggest promise who flopped jamie cureton biggest failure
probably hundreds more who we have rightly forgot
