Every day now there are more baler, combine and crop fires, it must be so disheartening for farmers who planted and nurtered those crops. Hopefully insurance companies like the NFU Mutual are able to cover the financial loss, but we must be getting to the stage where working in the heat and concern that it might all go up in smoke is affecting farmer's health.
Going to have to be some changes if temparatures like this are going to be the norm. Maybe cooling radiators for the hottest parts in new machinery? The insurance companies cannot keep on paying out either. Is George Eustace one of those on holiday, fair enough if he is, but fire service experts and machinery manufacturers need to come together to see if safety can be improved by, say, operating the combine for short periods with time to cool or clearing away dust regularly during use.
Meantime, let's hope there's no more disasterous losses for our farmers.

A lot of moving parts on a combine...maybe we should be changing what we grow to suit the change in weather

I heard a report on radio Shropshire on Wednesday and I’m sure it said 6 combines had caught fire and burnt out in one day in Shropshire….
