if that's the case its different but I wasn't to know that, I've based it on the thread announcing the game and their post on twitter. what I don't get it they don't like the rainbow washing stuff but maybe the club are confused as the rainbow is everywhere, its even taken over the club badge , I've got nothing against them , I just think they should move on and accept other countries laws, its being played in Spain for starters so the issue won't even arise. like I said if we start digging then were there any complaints when we played Galatasaray ? they have some different laws to us concerning the same sex relationships, and the legal age for consent for anyone there is 18 It's not a crime to miss something but I found out they'd responded to the club on Friday on that same Twitter thread you mention. Somebody asked the question (obviously not you!) and they replied. Not sure what might be confusing the club, it's a pretty straightforward issue, whichever side of the argument you're on. Do you really believe we should just accept other countries' laws? Germany didn't do anything illegal in WW2 according to its own laws at the time. Russia is doing nothing illegal in Ukraine as far as it's concerned. I interpret "when in Rome" along the lines of drink what the locals drink, not turn a blind eye to anything its government is doing. The fact the game's being played in Spain doesn't really change anything. Digging into the past is irrelevant - we're in the here and now. But, for what its worth, while Turkey certainly isn't as socially liberal as the western world it's not a crime to be gay there, unlike Qatar. We really should not be holding a World Cup there. A friendly with a Qatar club, not the national side, in Spain is not even on the same scale of "wrongness".

Grateful that the so-called 'Proud Salopians' have acknowledged that their opinions are not universally supported and welcome discourse.
Remarkable though that this story has gained so much traction on the basis of a few dozen likes on Twitter that the BBC have picked it up.
A penny for Steve's thoughts right now.
It's a game of football ffs.

Cant believe weve got to 3 pages of drivel about this game. Shrewsbury Town playing a Qatari team in a friendly vs the corruption of the world cup being played in that country. Priceless đ

Watched an interesting chat with Matt Le Tissier on YouTube earlier, he speaks a lot of sense, my takeaway from it was âpeople try get at me call me big nose.. , you know what, I couldnât give a ****, and if more people had that attitude itâd be a better placeâ then goes onto talk about people being offended on behalf of others..
Is anyone really upset that weâre playing a team from Qatar or was it mentioned because itâs the âright thing to doâ ?

Can't see it being the end of it if the MSM pick it up. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, I'm not going and not going Qatar. However after Watford pulling out the MSM will be swooping around this story. Its a non story , Shropshire Star put it on twitter and its hardly raised a whimper , Watford are much higher profile and also they were playing the Qatari National side , we are playing a club side in a insigficant friendly at a hotel in Benidorm . Two totally different situations You were saying....

Whose knocking out the social media posts for 'Proud Salopians'? Maybe we ought to consider them for a wider role at the club because no matter what your thoughts are on this particularly matter, they communicate and come across very well.

I think most people understand that this isn't comparable to England playing in Qatar or a friendly game against the Qatar national side. Its a pre-season friendly in a hotel complex in Spain against a club side (played in front of a handful of supporters). Despite the hullabaloo and the concern about the story hitting the national media, I think all things considered, everyone has come across pretty well in this...from the fans who raised concerns to the way the club has responded...đ

One thing that has certainly improved in Brian Caldwell's time here are the communication channels in and out the club. I have serious doubts an email from "Proud Salopians" was ever in his in-tray before the Watford/Qatar story broke on Tuesday and I suspect rather than going to the club directly with their concerns, they've decided to piggy-back on that news story for maximum impact. At the end of the day they're a football supporter group not political lobbyists. It's not so much 'keeping in their lane' but giving the club every chance to manage a potential issue before taking it to the media. I welcome their clarification statement though.

People (myself included) may have taken a different stance on this issue but few would dispute their position as a respected group within the more active elements of the fanbase who are doing a lot to break down prejudices and increase inclusion at the ground. Overall it's all been part of a dialogue that's got us to a pretty satisfactory outcome.

If a 'satisfactory outcome' is that one player wears a multi-coloured armband then you have to wonder if the negative PR in the national press was really worth the fuss. I'm almost certain the club would have agreed to make some form of concession behind the scenes if given the chance and therefore could have managed the situation on their own watch. I'm not aware of the work the "Proud Salopians" have done but that's probably my ignorance so I'll take your word for it. Ultimately though they are a fan group and should be working with the club as opposed to against it.

When looking to the response (to the supporters asking the club to reconsider; that they are making too much out of this, that they are creating a fuss out of nothing); that could well be said of one or two responding to the request (even though people have made good points when doing so, mind). Considering what the group is and why it was put together I don't think its a surprise that they thought to reach out to the club to reconsider or at least make some gesture of support. I'm OK that they thought to ask, I'm OK that the club have responded as they did. Don't get me wrong, I do think people have made some valid points and I think people are right to ask "where does all this end, where do we draw the line" (I tend to agree with that) but like I say above, at the end of the day, I think the club has come across well in this...

Having come into this late, I'm not going to comment (I've not read the full thread) apart from the fact that the statement from the Proud Salopians group is a measured one and that the club has responded in a similar fashion.
I hope that the relationship between the club and the Proud Salopians group is actually strengthened by what has taken place. That continued open and constructive dialogue is important to those who currently don't feel included as a supporter of our club.

One of my favourite guests on there to date. How the media have portrayed him to be is a disgrace. I agreed with virtually everything he said on there. I despise how society is shaping up to be offended by anything and everything. Not everybody has the same beliefs as others, doesnât make them wrong or a bad person. Just respect their beliefs and live your own life.

I'm not aware of the work the "Proud Salopians" have done but that's probably my ignorance so I'll take your word for it. Ultimately though they are a fan group and should be working with the club as opposed to against it. That's a very reductive take; it's a message of support for LGBTQ+ people globally and, for all we know, at Qatar SC itself. I don't agree that cancelling the game was appropriate but I do agree that this gesture is the right thing to do and it's probably not something I would have considered without the input of Proud Salopians. That's kind of the point of groups like that; representing the viewpoint of underrepresented groups and trying to ensure they don't get trampled and I think they've done a good job here. As for your basic premise that this is some kind of attention grabbing stunt from some fringe group, that's completely false and I can only assume the reason you haven't been picked up on this by anyone else is because people can't believe someone who claims to be a regular follower of the club wouldn't be aware of this group already. It started several years ago and there's been a banner in (i think) the East stand almost as long. The founder was (and possibly still is) a regular user of this forum and the group's inception caused quite a bit of debate on this very board. Worth doing a quick Google on these things in future, might save you looking like a berk.

When I was a child homosexuality in this country was a crime and whilst now quite rightly it no longer is and most people tolerate it I am fed up with all this LGBT and Pride crap being shoved down my throat. Live your unnatural life the way you want to by all means but live your life quietly and stop trying to normalise something that isnât. Everyone is too frightened to voice their opinion these days because of a loud minority and I for one have had enough, Of course we should play this team in Spain, their country has a right to have their views and Laws on homosexuality and if they still find it abhorrent that is their right. I can understand you being angry about this gay stuff being shoved down your throat. Just lie down and think of England.
In the latter years of it being illegal it was just known about and tolerated. It was the dark days when it was persecuted and people hauled off to prison that blighted our society. As long as time there has been homosexuality, whatever your individual views, each to their own. I can understand them being a little over the top in celebrating their freedoms these days, but they mean me no harm - it's not compulsory or anything. They are people, just living their time on earth the way they want to, mostly good people, just like any other group. I can also understand their desire for every country to allow people to live their life the way they want to.

The world is changing, just look at what Halifax are bringing in on name badges.
I'm afraid "outdated" views will be in the history books pretty soon.
Either embrace it or get forgotten about, we can't all be old and bitter.
It's the way the World is going.

The Loggerheads campaign was a battle won over several years which had the overwhelming backing of the supporters. It would probably play out differently in the 'twitter' era but I do recall the club held the party line for quite some time before eventually caving in. Some campaigners fought tirelessly and their sacrifices will never be forgotten. "The Battle of Qatar" started on social media about 11am yesterday and had blown over by tea time.

Remember the fuss and cost to the club bring back the loggerheads caused? Sometimes you have to go against the club. But that was a ratcheting up process. You start by a quiet word with the club, if you don't get an acceptable resolution, you ratchet up. This questioning of club activities went straight into a social media splurge, which, judging by the accetable resolution to all parties, there was no need for. The media thrives on picking up and sensationalising social media stories and people need to bear that in mind.
