Considering the cost of living going through the roof and levels of child poverty im pleased the Welsh goverment are doing this and i hope the rest of the union follows www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-61853137"Reception class children in Wales will get free school meals from September - the first in a rollout for all primary school pupils. All the country's approximately 272,000 primary school pupils are set to get free lunches by 2024. It is part of a deal between Plaid Cymru and the Labour Welsh government. Because of the cost of living crisis, ministers said they were working with local authorities to ensure it was started as quickly as possible. A total of £225m has been set aside to pay for it over the next three years. From September, Wales' 22 local authorities will begin receiving the money, with pupils aged four and five the first to get their free lunches."

Or am I missing something? considering it is run by Labour if google are right it seems they dont but this new deal means all primary school children will get free meals by 2024 and it wont be means tested and the welsh goverment have costed it and put it in there budget . from google "Reception class children in Wales will get free school meals from September - the first in a rollout for all primary school pupils. It's nice they're rolling this out as everyone loves something for free. When Wales has the worst education and NHS in the UK I'd of thought keeping school meals mean tested would have been the way to go and plough the money back into frontline services. It will be interesting how Plaid do in the next Welsh government elections after teaming up with the current labour government.

I can think of few things I’d rather help fund more than universal free school meals.
This really doesn’t need to be political.

It will be interesting how Plaid do in the next Welsh government elections after teaming up with the current labour government. it depends on wether the welsh goverment build on this , child poverty and devlopmental issues are factors in why some children dont thrive, if you look at purposed 3-5 and thrive scheme in Australia ,there reaearch showed 20 % of children had some form of developmental isue failure to deal with these issues leads to children from 10 onwards tuning out of school , having behaviour issues then youth crime , in there piolt school with poor academic achievment and social problems , introducing parenting lessons , free school meals and speech therapy had dramatic results, do nothing you have domino effect with large sums of mobey been spent later down the road or have children who have devloped an emotinoal quotent , improved academic achevement and all that entails. there is a need for a long term plan not short term knee jerk reactions
