We've been drawn in Group C alongside Port Vale, Stockport and an as yet determined Under 21 side.

At least the PJT can never lead to the indignity of losing to Bromley in the Wembley final.......

Have next to no interest in this trophy, same it seems as Cotterill, but can occasionally be tempted to the Meadow for a £5 night out on an otherwise uneventful evening. Could never envisage travelling to somewhere even as local as Vale or Stockport to support this competition though.

Made a memorable faux pas a few years back when for some reason I decided to do Port Vale away in the JPT (or whatever it was at the time) on a Tuesday night where it went to penalties and we lost. I didn't get home til gone midnight and it was a school night. As a consequence I really couldn't be arsed to make almost the identical trip exactly a week later to Stoke in the FA Cup and missed one of the most eventful games in recent memory. Not my finest hour.

Back in its infancy as the League Group Cup I remember standing on the open bank at Bradford City in a snowstorm to watch a 0-0 draw after extra time in early December, think there were 9 of us on Smithys coach. We won on pens but the snow was so bad we nearly didnt get back over the Pennines on the M62 and hardly played another game for about a month. The next gripping instalment was away at Grimsby on a Tuesday night at end of January. Snow had gone but it wasnt much warmer. We lost (as we usually do up there).

I remember watching the grimsby game live on ceefax at an uncles house, we didn't have such a tv at the time, if I remember right town led 1-0 for ages and then the teletext updated late on to 2-1 , it was hi tech stuff at the time that

Must have got a comp, as I sat in the stand (the one that caught fire a few years later). Can’t recall Grimsby in next round though

Would have been quite happy to give them the win and get back on the coach. Was so cold that night there was frost on the inside windows of the coach. The things we used to do to support your team eh? Think Grimsby wasnt long after the thaw set in, possibly the hastily arranged Welsh Cup game up at Cearnarfon played on a sunday.

Even after all these years when I hear 'Stockport, Tuesday night away' I always think back to that win up there when Dave Bennet was brilliant, scored (a couple I think) but was then injured late on which pretty much ended his career. Even today I can still remember being on that open terrace behind the goal thinking what the hell is going on as Bennet bossed the game (and hoping that we may have found someone who was going to make a huge difference to our season).

Working for STFC media I got to know the freelance cameramen who regularly where seconded to STFC to film on behalf of Sky/beeb. One lad Steve was a Stockport fan and invited me to Edgeley Park to do co-commentary duties on a Tuesday night game against Salop. We won 3-0 and Cookey got a hat trick….was a very pleasant experience all told.

It was a real novelty back then I remember getting home just after midnight on Saturday night and mum telling me Smithy wanted me to ring him whatever time I got home (no mobiles back then). Rang him and he told me about the game and could I give him a lift into Shrewsbury to get the coach. I'm guessing the game was arranged literally with 24 hours notice. Left Shrewsbury looking like a polar wasteland, and wearing suitably big walking boots for all the snow we would be standing in. Got there and there was no snow at all...

Very much looking forward to totally ignoring the Leyland Daf/ Lick a Paint/ Papa Knows Best Trophy. Ear we go again, p-pull who 'av no interest, posting in a thread they 'av no interest in, to remind us they 'av no interest in it.
We can play our youngsters and we might spot a youngster playing for someone else we might be interested in. Serves a purpose, has prize money, that will do for me. As for fans, gets in lads and dad who may never have been to a match on a summer evening for a fiver, maybe makes a supporter out of them.
