Another vote for All along the Watchtower by Hendrix though the Dylan original is also great. To add a new one All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople is better than the original Bowie song.

Although there were many versions of Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers takes some beating. It caused a few tears to be shed when featured in the film, Ghost. I didn't cry, but I had to get my hankie out when I got something in my eye at the end of the film.

I love Labi Siffre's music, but the Madness version of "It Must Be Love" is for me a better version than Labi's original...
Just saying....

I Fought The Law. The Clash/The Crickets David Watts. The Jam/The Kinks A New England. Kirsty MacColl/Billy Bragg Dear Prudence. Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Beatles Honourable mention goes to Carter USM for a live performance of Down in the Tube Station at Midnight I managed to catch on the Old Grey Whistle Test many years ago, but have been unable to find since even after trawling through YouTube. it was available on the cd single of the only living boy in new cross.đ Carter were a great band.

Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Saint Etienne. Never realised it was a cover of a Neil Young song until it featured on a âbest cover songsâ show on Radio 6.

I think Mott's was the first release of the song though, wasn't it? Bowie wrote it for them - could be wrong but I don't think a Bowie version was released before Mott's came out.

For those who like a bit of jazz I would say My Favourite Things by John Coltrane (about as far from the Sound of Music as you can get). Also anything covered by Amy Winehouse but particularly Valerie and The Girl from Ipanema.

I don't know why, but I much prefer this to the original "Mike Flowers" - was that Michael Fabric***'s stage name?

I asked my wife for her suggestions and she immediately came back with Madonna's version of "American Pie" over the original by Don McLean. To be honest I'm not a fan of either.

I have to disagree there, I do love madness and that song by then but the original wins for me, the guitar solo in the middle knocks spots of the madness sax version

Another vote for Nirvanaâs acoustic cover of Bowie. Ugly Kid Joeâs Cats in the cradle cover isnât too bad either.

Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead OâConnor (so much better than the Prince original)
However, I always preferred The Sutherland Brothersâ original version of Sailing to Rod Stewartâs.

That will throw a few people who probably think Rod wrote Sailing
BTW did you know that Iain Sutherland died in Wollerton, next to Hodnet, in 2019.

Yep, Arms of Mary was their only hit single and at that time they had joined up with Quiver. However after a few years the two bands split and they went back to being a duo. Saw them many times at Liverpool Stadium in my youth, but they where always the support band never the headliners

Went to see Beck in Manchester last night, someone I have waited to see for near on 25 years and he didn't disapoint, he does an acoustic cover of the Korgis "everyone's got to learn sometimes" which is excellent.

A vote for Black Magic Woman by Santana. I know its heresy, but its head and shoulders above the original Fleetwood Mac version.
Also one not heard regularly: Stop! by Joe Bonamassa a really bluesy version of the 1988 Sam Brown song.
