I'm not a great lover of cover versions usually, but a few have struck home with me. Before your time for some of the younger posters, but I liked a group called The Equals. The lead singer and very talented writer, Eddy Grant, wrote a lot of their music. They had a hit with Baby Come Back, which was ok, but I preferred a version by Pato Banton, which was more reggae style and appealed to me more and went to Number one in the UK in 1994.
I've never been a massive fan of The Rolling Stones or Beatles, (Are you allowed to say that?), but I do like a cover of Ruby Toosday, as she calls it, by Melanie and play it nearly every day.
You prefer any cover versions?

Not sure if it really counts but REM and U2 sang One which I’ve always thought was infinitely better than the just U2 version👍

Make Me Smile-Wedding Present--fast and furious as opposed to Cockney Rebel's but to oppose that, OMD's version of the More I See You is criminal.

The Faith No More version of "Easy" is probably my favourite cover of all time;
China Drum's version of "Wuthering Heights" is defo in the "preferred the cover" category;
Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah"?

Just as an aside, although I didn't see The Equals live, they were well known for being great value for money at their gigs.

"So much in love" by The Mighty Avengers. You've got to be getting on a bit to remember this cover of a Rolling Stones song.

Song To The Siren - This Mortal Coil. The Tim Buckley original is lovely but Liz Fraser's vocal takes it somewhere else. Robert Plant recorded a good version too.
If You Go Away - Scott Walker
Love Hurts - Emmylou Harris & Gram Parsons - Emmylou's many cover versions usually better the originals.
Twist & Shout - The Beatles
And one original that's better known as a horribly overblown and vastly inferior, megahit cover version - Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.

The other way round where a records released and doesn’t make any impact then released by a group to become a massive hit….
Ill give you Tainted love by Gloria Jones. Became popular in Northern Soul clubs after DJ Richard Searling bought a ten year old copy in America ans started playing it for it to become a hit in clubs. Released by Gloria Jones which flopped and subsequently released by Soft Cell then rereleased with Marc Slmond and Soft Cell which became the hit 25 years after the original release..
for me it’s alway Gloria Jones
