We're due to meet some friends we haven't seen in years and want to book a table for 4 at an Italian (or other European-style) restaurant in Shrewsbury one evening next week. Don't know the town well for restaurants so any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks!

La Lanterna at The Old Vestry is your best bet for a decent Italian

There's quite a few good Italian places tbh. La Lanterna is very nice but it's tiny so book well in advance. Hard to beat for a quirky, Shrewsbury location though. The one on the square (La Piazzeta) is more at the cheap and cheerful end but pretty good. I'm told La Dolce Vita is really nice but quite pricey apparently (Hills Lane, opposite the car park).
The best Italian in town for the food and all round hidden gem was Giuseppe in Frankwell which is no longer there sadly as the proprietor passed away. It is now a very nice fish place though (Mer Rouge) which is earth a shot. Frankwell also has a tapas place (on Welsh Bridge, Aioli y tu) and a tapas/Mediterranean place on the roundabout, the Olive Tree, which has a really nice beer garden.
There's the tapas place in town, barracks passage, Casa Naranjo too. Kind of spoiled for choice in Salop for "European" style food tbh.

La Lanterna, Paolo's or La Dolce Vita for Italian. There is supposed to be a new one opening where Yates was but no idea when (or if it has).
Casa Naranjo, Oliver Tree or Aleoli Y Tu for Spanish
Exo Poli for Greek
Cote Brasserie for French

Always used to enjoy Paolo’s for an Italian, but haven’t been there for a few years.
The Olive Tree is top notch and has a cracking beer garden to eat in (out!!)
We had a very nice meal at Ego at The Grapes too. They do Mediterranean style food and obviously have easy access to parking too

Good news that they're expanding but hope the venue finds another tenant as a restaurant/bar or similar as it was a great, quirky little spot. Shame for it to go for housing as everything seems to these days. I see the place on Mardol that was meant to be becoming an "authentic Italian" run by the same family as Paolo's I'm told (who also apparently run Ennio's in Wem which is actually a pretty decent place to eat if you ever find yourself out in the wilds of North Shropshire) has been sold, wonder if something will finally go in there again? Think it was the American bbq type place before.

(Can’t remember his name George?) to the shop under the flats

The guy was literally called Giuseppe (though I guess may have gone by an anglicised name for the sake of ease). Still spoke with a broad Italian accent despite having lived in Shrewsbury since mid 20th century- never sure how much he was hamming it up though. Place looked like it hadn't had a refurb since the 80s too and you could see his Mrs doing some of the cooking in the kitchen when you waited downstairs to be seated with a drink. Unbelievable food though.

The corner shop was the news agents The Roundabout newsagents were two houses and the restaurant was George Thomas’s shop (I think) The current island had been back to back terraces with a couple of pubs demolished in the 50s….My dad lived in New Street in a house called The Glimpse now Haffren House my gran rented it off Pooks for 55 year. She was called Tiny Turner (youngest of 12) and strangely her next door neighbour was called Mini Caldwell

Definitely 2010/11 ish there was still a little post office and greengrocers there. Wracking my brains to think what's in there now (despite the username I moved out of Shrewsbury 4 years ago)?

Yes I think the father George died many years ago then his son ran it til he retired. Empty last time I looked.

That's been sold off along with the Pizza Express, I'm not sure whether it's impacting anything that's in there or whether it's simply a property/investment deal, I'm assuming its the latter. www.shropshirelive.com/business/2022/05/25/neighbouring-shrewsbury-restaurant-properties-sold-in-off-market-deal/But that place has never done well, in my lifetime I can think of it as Yates', a Sports Bar and a BBQ Restaurant, none of them have been particularly successful.

Wasn’t it The Empire cinema originally? Pizza express is currently in the building that was the cinema. This is the place next door.
