The way i see below is the minimum we need/have for a FULL FIRST TEAM squad.
Keeper - Marosi Keeper - Burgoyne
Left side defender/fullback - Nurse Left side defender/fullback - Right side defender/fullback - Bennett Right side defender/fullback -
Central Defender - Pennington Central Defender - Flanagan Central Defender - Central Defender -
Midfielder - Shipley Midfielder - Leahy Midfielder - Midfielder - Midfielder -
Forward - Udoh Forward - Bloxham Forward - Bowman Forward - (Pyke & Caton) Sure to go out on loan That would give a first team squad of only 19 players. For me that's not enough. But even so that's an additional 8 players required. Do we need more?

Is the ghost of summer 2021 is starting to appear? I do hope not.
There will be plenty of movement in the coming few weeks, hopefully we will do better than last summer.

Squads in League 1 are limited to 20 players aren't they?
Therefore we'll need 9 new players, though I wouldn't be averse to omitting Burgoyne from the squad and bringing in another 'keeper to give Marosi some competition. Burgoyne could join Pyke and Caton in going out on loan.

Add youngster Josh Barlow to our midfield. Recently signed a pro contract.

I'm sure we will sign Marlon Pack to bolster our squad after our signings of Will Keane, Chuks Aneke and Jack Whatmough last summer.
I'm also highly sure it isnt just throwing the Star some names beyond our reach so we can have the inevitable melt down in August by the manager about missing out on key targets they'd worked all summer on.
Some things never change.

At this stage of the close season I am a glass half-full person so I am looking forward to a number of good signings in plenty of time for the team to get in a good pre-season and to hit the ground running from the first game of the new season.

Wonder if we havnt arranged a game out in Spain yet incase we cant raise a team?

I REALLY hope we don’t make the same mistakes with Cotterill that we have for the last two windows.
Yes we’d all love Flint & Pack but they both as Lewis Cox mentioned appear to have one more good move left each in them.

We have a great spine to our team. A half decent CB and CM gives us a starting 11 capable of a midtable finish at least imo. It is squad players we will need.
SC might struggle to get players to sign a contact but the quality of players he has signed permanently have been of a high standard. I have faith in his signings to do well, I lack the same faith in regards to him getting his targets but with the Sale of Norburn and Ogbeta last season he hopefully has a better budget to play about with.

Signing footballers is a bit like buying a house. It's not yours until you sign the contract. How many times have we been caught with our pants down by being told players are going to sign and then they went elsewhere.
Will Grigg any Juan? Then Brian get's all stuffy about it when they don't.
Gullible or what.....

we not only need to fill in the gaps from the players who have left but also have some decent players who can challenge for the first team, we cant afford to a repeat of the end of the season were the first team picked itself, we need a strong bench as well to cover injurys and suspensions.

Here’s one. A 4th goalkeeper on the books next season.

Well that's 3 keepers we can have on the bench for the pre season friendlies rather than just 2 last summer. Progress of sorts.

Fully expect him to be no2. Bevan/Parke out on loan maybe.

Will depend on formation being utilised, but also we know Cotterill likes a player who can play across several positions anyway so it may not be entirely clear where some players will fit - Bennett, Nurse, Leahy etc already can play across 2 or 3 positions. Most of the rest of the squad have played in several roles too. Expect that to continue to a degree

Yes I like the flexible position approach we have utilised. But just cant see us signing even 5 players. I hope we utilise the loan market better this season....

I’ve not seen either of the younger keepers play, but I already have more faith in them than I do in Burgoyne as second choice.

It's a blow to lose Vela but I'll stand by my assessment that, with the addition of a new centre back and now a new centre mid required, I think the core 9 players we have is still pretty decent.
As ever though, depth is the worry.
We still have the best part of 2 months till the season starts so I'm not panicking yet and would prefer Steve to stick to his policy of signing quality rather than packing the squad with journeymen.
I'm wondering if part of the strategy is to do with when clubs release youngsters for loans? Certainly wouldn't object to a few more Fornah type signings.
Will Steve take his time over a new centre back and midfielder then try to pack the bench with loans and youth? I'm not opposed to that strategy (particularly use of youth players) but he needs to actually use the players he's got to make it work.

Would obviously be a magnificent signing but you'd have to see us as 3rd place there given we're up against a championship club he played more than 200 games for and his home town club. That really would be a "statement signing" if Steve can pull it off though. Expect the difference in wages between what Salop and Bristol will offer is pretty enormous though 🙄 Edit; from looking at their financials, Portsmouth do look to pay much higher wages than we do (wage bill North of £7m) do expect this is a non starter. Really does look like it comes down to finance yet again. Portsmouth have cumulative losses of more than £4m but seem to be being bankrolled by whoever their parent company is (looks like they bought another £5m in shares in 21/22 and wrote off a £2m debt). Bristol City also another financial basket case that seems to be propped up by its ownership. Really feels like unless town can find someone willing to buy Roland out for the right money and put up some investment of their own we will continue to struggle as succeeding by "living within your means" seems a thing of the past.
