I could understand if he left us for a team in the championship or a club throwing money chasing promotion in league one, but Fleetwood? Comes across as a bit of a snake.

Another snake to join an ever growing list. Let's get this straight the club have never said either had signed a new deal just agreed one. Gentleman's agreements count for nothing this day and age

Would like clarification from the SS as to whether they got it wrong or were told by the club he’d signed. No club would announce a verbal acceptance of a contract prior to signing surely?

very disappointed by vela if this is the case but the days of a getlemans agreement are long gone, if it has not been signed it is worth nothing.

If my boss offered me a new contract but said you'll have to wait until the Chief Exec comes back off his summer jollies, and in the meantime someone came along and hijacked the deal with a better offer I'd be inclined to take it.
Reminds me in a roundabout way of the 'I'm Alan Partridge' sketch where he's offered a second series and a 5 year deal at the BBC only for the chief exec to keel over and die just as he's about to sign it.
Until the ink's dry, it's not signed.
Edit: Looks like it was Vela that went on holiday without signing it, not Caldwell.

May all be above board. May have signed a contract. May be on high pay. We may have someone waiting in the wings. May not even be leaving, but maybe leaving on good terms, better for him, better for us. But, if he agreed terms but didn't put ink on the contract and has then decided not to and sign for Fleetwood, then he and his agent are out of order and we might be best rid. If that was the case then Jordan Shipley shows how it should be done and is more "our type".
Maybe a clue that he IS leaving is that there is no comment from Lewis Cox. Maybe he has to keep stum until an annoucement of his departure and a great replacement?
www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/shrewsbury-town-fc/2022/06/01/josh-vela-set-to-leave-shrewsbury-town-for-fleetwood/In that case "if he agreed terms but didn't put ink on the contract and has then decided not to and sign for Fleetwood, then he and his agent are out of order and we might be best rid. If that was the case then Jordan Shipley shows how it should be done and is more "our type" applies.

As you say, the club has never said 'signed'. You can imagine some heads rolling in MWM as we speak! The social media team have certainly been rushed into action. Next announcement: The price of the Balti pies are being frozen for next season. A good day to bury bad news and all that

‘Snake’ is harsh. He didn’t confirm he was signing. The club did. I don’t know why supporters expect loyalty from players anymore. They’re no different from us. If they are offered more money from a new employer then most of the time they will go. I was surprised he was ‘signing’ in the first place. He wouldn’t be a ‘snake’ if he’d rejected a deal in the first place It could be a stunt by the club to announce he was accepting the deal to pressure players to sign. We don’t know.

We should have got him to sign on the dotted line sooner 😉
Joking aside, it's saying something that Fleetwood is a bigger draw than us.

Seems a bit naïve to think a player who's openly talked about wanting to impress other suitors and ran down his contract was going to sign his new contract when he got back from holiday.
Let's just hope the higher up's saw this coming and have a replacement in mind.

We look a bit amateurish/naive in announcing an agreed but unsigned deal, whilst Vela comes across as a snake for verbally agreeing a contract but then backing out of it to sign elsewhere.

He verbally agreed to a deal but then decided to back out of it*. He's entitled to it but in most walks of life, if you give someone your word and then back out of it then snake is probably one of the kinder descriptions you'd be given. * Based on what the club have told us. We of course don't know what has happened but that applied to 99.9% of dealings in football, particularly at our club. But unless Mr Vela comes out to rubbish the clubs claims, I'll have to go by their version of events.
