Who cares really. He's bang average. I wouldn't burst into tears if it's true. I thought he went well off the boil in the last part of the season. Always had a red card in him as well.

Who cares really. He's bang average. I was happy when he 'apparently' signed a new deal as it suggested a degree of ambition as he was being courted by other clubs. I'm also equally as happy if he does leave because he's vastly overrated and at times a complete liability. Agreed, I don’t mind if he goes and we bring in a more defensive minded midfielder to give Leahy and Shipley a bit more freedom.

Can only imagine he agreed new terms in principle, but hadn’t yet signed the deal. And has since had his head turned by a much larger offer.
He didn’t have his best season this season just gone, but he’s certainly not overrated. He’s a solid League One player which is exactly what we want.

Free transfer should equal he signed a contract.
Letting him go for free may equal he was on big pay, Fleetwood were preparedd to pay enough to tempt him, Cotterill reckons he can replace or better him and possibly on a lower wage.
Another Alan Nixon snippet that would affect us about Derby: "To have a takeover deal approved by the EFL, a club is required to own or lease its own ground, which has led to the option of a groundshare with either fellow Midlands side Leicester or Stoke being explored, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon. Derby will play the 2022-23 campaign in League One as long as the club is able to exit administration following a hopeful confirmed sale, after Wayne Rooney's side were relegated from the Championship owing to a 21-point deduction in relation to the club's financial difficulties".

Utter rubbish Have you seen Fleetwood's accounts? Likely they've blown our offer out of the water, on an average League 1 midfielder. Hope they go down, small club racking up stupid losses and still being s**t Think he was on about this has been handled overall. Did he sign a new contract or not? The article seems to suggest him and Bennett agreed new terms. A statement from the Club would help!

Perhaps they want to be able to announce new exciting signings to replace anyone they let go on a free transfer?

'Speaking about the new deal for Vela, boss Steve Cotterill told the club website: "I'm delighted that we've agreed a new deal with Josh.
"He's a great lad who was obviously in the team when I first arrived at the club and no matter whether I've been here or when I was away, he's always given maximum effort'.
BBC News.
So what the hell is this all about?

I'm sure we have plenty more targets as replacement if he goes - just hope we get more success at landing them than we did last summer 😳

I'd be happy if he stayed but he was well off his performances from last season. He is replaceable and if we want to do better then we need to have players of higher quality.

Ex Player of the Season Current highest appearance holder for players at the club
Very Hard to replace on best form.
However we saw little of that after the "shop window" comments around the Liverpool game, and then that ****ing stupid red card.
But still, leaves us weaker as of right now, and hoping we can find a suitable replacement....
There was already lots of work to do, but this just makes it even harder.

shambles from the player if he's already said he will stay, good player when on form but always a stupid tackle away from a red and doesn't seem to learn. Went off the boil after Christmas so i was surprised as anyone when i heard he was staying. Another big role to fill, but I'm sure we can do better

Who cares really. He's bang average. In the great scheme of things I suppose but decent enough for us I'd say. We've already got a fair amount of work to do rebuilding, I think this would be an error.

The journo that broke the news said that Shrewsbury and Fleetwood both offered good terms, obviously Fleetwood's closer to his home so assume that was the deal breaker.
He can't have ever signed the new contract despite what the news says, probably agreed terms but wasn't going to sign until his current contract expired and his agent has obviously been touting him around.

I think if all this is true it is clear that he verbally agreed terms with us but had not signed. He’s shook hands on a deal but since then Fleetwood have come in with big bucks.
An embarrassing, pathetic state of affairs from the Club. They should’ve said he had been offered a contract, not signed - which is what usually happens. It’s only the Star that reported he had signed, and we know how accurate they are.
I blame Vela just as much for going back on his word, this is an awful look on everybody. Looking forward to hearing Cotterill on this.
Let’s hope we have a proper statement soon CONFIRMING Bennett has signed.

The club said agreed not signed but we took it at that (seems wrongly now) very poor from the club and player, the club needs to keep its cards close to its chest in situations like this, don’t say anything unless everything’s signed and sealed and give other clubs to swoop and hijack the deal.

May all be above board. May have signed a contract. May be on high pay. We may have someone waiting in the wings. May not even be leaving, but maybe leaving on good terms, better for him, better for us. But, if he agreed terms but didn't put ink on the contract and has then decided not to and sign for Fleetwood, then he and his agent are out of order and we might be best rid. If that was the case then Jordan Shipley shows how it should be done and is more "our type".
Maybe a clue that he IS leaving is that there is no comment from Lewis Cox. Maybe he has to keep stum until an annoucement of his departure and a great replacement?

I mean, a contract is worth very little in today's game.
But if it wasn't signed on the dotted line, why did the club tell us it was a done deal?

From STFC Website:
On Josh Vela:
Shrewsbury Town can also say that it would appear that Josh Vela will not be signing another deal with the club. Having agreed a new two-year deal with Steve Cotterill the day after the Wigan game, the club had his new contract ready at the start of May and sent it to him to sign. He then also subsequently agreed to sign the contract once again with Brian Caldwell after he returned from holiday.
