My daughter is a Paramedic , verball abuse and threats is part of her daily work and this news item is no suprise to me . www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-61583057"I shouldn't have to work out my escape route when I walk into a property." Paramedic Joanna Paskell was a victim of one of the near-3,000 attacks on emergency workers in Wales last year. The patient who punched her got a 12-month community order, but it left the 45-year-old suffering with anxiety and meant she was off work for four months. With an anticipated spike in 999 calls over the four-day bank holiday weekend, ambulance bosses have asked people to work with them, not against them." Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert, said he was " disgusted" to see the rise in assaults on emergency workers. He added: "These are people who have dedicated themselves to keeping us safe and well, and they deserve to carry out their duty without being threatened, assaulted and abused." Mr Cuthbert said it had been a year since magistrates were given greater powers to deal with people who assault emergency workers, including the power to impose longer prison sentences, adding: "I hope that we will now see a downward trend in these appalling assaults going forward."

There is no deterrent. The courts are weak on the issue and people know it.
Nobody should go to work fearing that they may be the subject of abuse or worse, assault.
And it doesn’t help when some trawl out the line ‘you knew the risks when you joined the job’. Does that make it right or acceptable??
Yes I know the risks of my job, but it doesn’t make it any easier for my family whilst I’m at work, and it certainly doesn’t guarantee my safety.
Zen - I sincerely hope your daughter is ok and can go about her amazing work safely.

the problem I have with our country is we pay people who are out of work to basically do whatever they want, I know we have tightened up in the last couple of decades but it still happens
this needs to stop, whether they pick up litter, sit and watch cctv, man phone lines, or act as security we need to sort it out
all emergency vehicles have room for a security guard hospitals have room for any kind of help

Thanks ; she loves her job and it is somthing she wanted todo from the age of 12. i do worry about her but i know she is very astute and good at reading the room but she could still be in the wrong place at the wrong time and her job increases that possibility. the issues i have is , this has now become the norm what is wrong with a minority in our society , the courts reluctance to prosecute such individuals to the full extent of the law as most just get a slap on the wrist and the police reluctance to respond to calls from paramedics to do a joint visit if the person has a history of violence or there is some concern raised by the paramedic. i hope you keep safe in whatever line of work you do as well.
