Barclays was my first bank so iv stayed with them, but not 100% sure of the time line but they had a revamp of the bank 6 /7 years ago and i think they had about 6 tills most of them maned , then a few years back they added the self service machines ( i pointed out to a staff member that they were doing themselves out of a job) which you can do a lot with and cut hte till to two fairly soon only one was maned , last few years as with other banks/ building socitys really pushed the banks app and online banking , last few months till hours cut to 9 to 2 , then unmaned and you have to ask for somone to open it up for a service. three weeks ago a six fot sign tills are closed, so i asked have you stoped the tills and was told no they are just unmanded. i said it was rather disingenous as the sign should say the till are unmanded, the responce" no it is not " but the till is closed on a saturday, went in last weeke and now the till will ba avilable 10 to 2 monday to wednesday, i asked what was the rational and they said a lack of footfall. in my view this is a deliberate plan by Barclays to just discourage any customer who wonts change from using thte bank and hten justify it by saying there is no demand which is hardly a suprise as they limit a service you will have less demand. what you can do in a branch is becoming less and less as there standered responce is use the app. for a small miority who clearely the bank dont wont as customers is , anyone who run's a cash business ,and anyone who wonts change and anyone who does not wont to use an app or online banking. it seems customer service and face to face banking will soon be somthing of the past . when 85% of it's own customers rate it as bad it seems im not alone uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.barclays.co.uk

Sadly all banks are going the same way. HSBC are a nightmare. I changed to TSB a few years ago but even they aren’t what they were. It’s an Internet world and blow those of us who would rather deal with a person.
I refuse to use self checkouts as well for the same reason - doing someone out of a job. If I wanted to be a check out operator, I’d apply for a job.

I’m not a Barclays customer myself but great to hear they’re embracing change in this way. Making banking more convenient for customers through online, apps, self-service is a huge step in the right direction, plus the odd till for the very rare occasions they’re genuinely required.

I opened my first account when I was 17 with my grant check at Lloyds. Still my main account but haven’t been in for 20 years, never had the need to….
However I appreciate some would rather catch a bus into town to transact their business (as long as the bus still runs that is)

www.ft.com/content/cdf03d65-5045-4c3a-8384-cae176cda2fbCarlos San Juan, a septuagenarian Spaniard, has just pulled off an extraordinary coup. Two months ago he launched a petition to encourage banks to stop excluding older customers by closing branches and pushing vital transactions online. The Change.org campaign attracted nearly 650,000 signatures with a memorable slogan: “Soy mayor, NO idiota” — I’m old, NOT an idiot. Last week, the Spanish authorities and banking associations published a 10-point plan, to be backed by legislation, to guarantee that elderly people receive “personal, humane, high-quality treatment”.

My wife banks with Nat West.
When we moved to Cheshire her nearest branch was in Tarporley (2 miles away). Within 18 months it had closed. We do our weekly shop in Winsford and so my wife started using the Nat West in the shopping precinct. But, that branch has also now closed. Her options are now Chester or Nantwich. Fortunately she has now embraced internet banking.
I'm with the Halifax, I think my nearest branch is in Chester but I actually prefer internet banking.

That is of course what they want you to do, embrace it. I was reluctant to do so at first like many but it's actually MUCH more convenient and not hard to pick up. I use Halifax and was often into the Wellingtton branch a couple of times a week. I went in the other week (to pay a few coin bags in) and its probably the first time in 12 months. You can even pay notes into your account at your local Post Office

" digital disenfranchisement" doesn't seem to be taken seriously any more. My elderly parents and mother in law might be able to use a tablet to watch something or keep in touch with family but they'll never be able to transact their finances digitally, and why should they? As the man said, old not stupid. I wish people would consider the effect on others rather than just thinking about themselves. Some people actually like to go into town, meet others & be sociable. It's better for your mental health than sitting in a chair all day pretending your online presence is the real you.
Online banking is convenient for me (I've been with the branch-free First Direct for over 30 years) but not for everyone. If banks really had their customers' interests at heart they'd have shared premises with each other, opening once a week in towns, rather than leaving altogether. Sure you can use a Post Office but they're harder to find these days as well.
This week I'm going to take my dad into Nationwide, the last bank in their town, to transfer their accounts from TSB, which is just closing. I've explained it all to my dad and told him not to worry, but he's worried. TSB don't care - one letter to say we're closing, go online or go to Warrington.
When I started my business I chose NatWest because they had a branch in Wem. That closed and they moved me to Shrewsbury. I switched to Yorkshire Bank but that's now Virgin and apparently there's a branch in Birmingham. There's no service as such, just a processing website, but it's ok for now. I'll probably switch to Starling when my free banking period runs out.
No point being loyal unless it makes your life easier - I banked with Midland, Lloyds & Barclays before First Direct came along. All much of a muchness in our beige digital world.

Yes, both the banks in Tarporley closed within a few months of one another despite being very well used. I'm surprised you don't travel to Northwich though. Still has a Nat West and has an excellent butchers and chippie!

Never mind. The Rising Sun at Tarporley serves an excellent pint! Decent pub food too Yeah, it had an iffy period after the landlord who'd been there for many years left, but Robinson's has invested in the building and it's now back to being a pub well worth a visit.

It is largely forgotten that you you can do most regular bank transactions at the Post Office. As it happens called into my nearest bank branch today. Had a detailed transaction to make which involved them taking care that I wasn't being scammed which was fair enough. I pointed out that the details I was giving out could be overheard by anyone in the queue and why was I not given more privacy. The cashier admitted I should have been offered that.

We bought a new car recently and because the car was going to be in my wife's name, the payment had to be made by her. Her daily payment allowance was nowhere near sufficient to cover it so she requested for it to be increased via the Nat West app. That's when the fun started! The procedure required facial recognition, well, would it work, would it heck! We tried everything, lights on, lights off, different rooms, you name it. In the end we gave it up as a bad joke and went into the branch instead. 5 minutes later it was all sorted. Technology might be great but only when it works!

I've not found the need to enter a bank for at least a decade now. Similar goes for the town centre, unless it's to eat or drink I simply don't go into town.
I laugh most Saturday mornings at the huge queue around the gyratory waiting to get into town and wonder what they're going for?!
