A very sad loss, especially to the tight-knit world of racing. He was a complicated man, whose deafness and speech impediment made it difficult for him to communicate well but the public certainly recognised his genius in the saddle and a will to win (by virtually any means) that I have only ever seen replicated by one Sir AP McCoy. He struggled for over thirty years as a jockey with eating very little as his riding weight was probably about two stone below his natural weight but was incredibly strong in the saddle when he needed to be, as when he virtually lifted the non-stayer Roberto over the line to win the Derby by the smallest of margins. He was the first freelance jockey and disliked by some other jockeys for taking their rides in big races. He lost the ride on the favourite El Gran Senor before one Derby to the great Pat Eddery after falling out with the owners. The horse just got narrowly beat in the race and Piggott stuck his head in amongst the group of mortified owners and said 'Are you missing me?' Piggott was also famous in racing for being 'careful' with his money. His habit of channelling untaxed earnings into Swiss bank accounts brought him to the attention of the Inland Revenue but he made the mistake of paying the sum owing from the first investigation with a cheque from another account which was undeclared! The Revenue lost their patience with him at that point and he became one of the very few people to be prosecuted and jailed for tax evasion. Piggott, for all his faults, will be rightly remembered as one of the greatest jockeys of all time and I doubt if we will ever see his like again.
