"Officials said they recovered the two AR-15 style rifles from the scene at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. The gunman, who had attended Uvalde High School, purchased one of the rifles from a federally licensed gun store on May 17, the day after his 18th birthday" Which he was legally allowed to do. A few years I was on holiday in Orlando and whilst at a Shopping Mall, much like the Charles Darwin in Shrewsbury, whilst the wife and daughter were in a clothes shop I went into a Gun Shop next door. Whilst in the shop, which had all manner of guns and rifles on the wall, the attendant asked what I was interested buying. I explained that I was only a tourist. They then went on to show me what I, as a tourist, could legally buy if I had photographic ID on me. I could buy all manner of handguns and rifles but not AR-15 style rifles. They even offered to take me to an onsite firing range FOC to try out the product; I didn't but it was a real eye opener I can tell you.

Thanks to social media I've been able to see comments from everyday people in the States and I'm still genuinely amazed at what I see, particularly from people who seem fairly intelligent but have this gun culture firmly engrained in them. There are two common themes
The first is this whole argument about their rights to bear arms and how their rights are being taken away if gun control is brought in, in a civilised country why do people need a gun in their house? The second one is that more armed police/security/teachers need to be in place at schools, it defies belief that you see yet another massacre at a school and your first thought is 'lets arm staff'.

Because unlike over here when their houses are robbed the offender is probably armed with a gun themselves. Gated Communities all over Florida have armed security guards patrolling day and night its proper mad when you see that going on. Yeah bizarre that the first reaction is to put more guns into circulation?!

I'm aware of that but it comes back to ease of access to guns and the whole gun culture. The whole 'I need a gun to protect myself' results in more guns being available and the circle goes on.

Trump's speech at the NRA convention included increased calls to pass gun control legislation in the wake of the shooting amounted to a “grotesque effort by some in our society to use the suffering of others to advance their own extreme political agenda.” linkYet, he himself a few years ago wanted to ban the sale of AK15 style semi-automatics and increase the age you could buy one to 21 - until it was pointed out to him that NRA members were big donators. Surely any sane person can see that they need to stop semi-automatic weapons getting into the hands of 18 year olds? Armed gaurds in primary schools? Barmy. He also read out the names of those who died, with a bell toiling. If I was one of those who lost someone I would not have wanted their name read out at a gun rally.

Until the US sees what is obvious to everyone else and makes the changes it needs to make, this will just go on and on. There really are no words that can comfort those losing their loved ones so needlessly, or that can make the boneheads drop their selfish addiction and do what needs to be done. its like raising the speed limit over here , no one will do it because every future death will be pinned on them same as guns over there, all the law abiding people hand over their guns, all the criminals keep theirs and more people get robbed, raped, or die of course the numbers would slowly improve but politics is all about a quick fix, not for someone elses benefit further down the line they need a referendum and let the people decide that always works ;-)

Yeah bizarre that the first reaction is to put more guns into circulation?! it is depressing but after other gun related massacres gun sales go up. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7369030/"Mass shootings continue to increase at an exponential rate in the United States. These mass shootings along with the legislative changes enacted in response appear to have a proportional and additive effect on gun sales." www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/may/31/us-gun-sales-rise-pandemic"Gun sales, which spiked sharply during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, have continued to increase in the United States, with first-time buyers making up more than one-fifth of Americans who purchased guns. The development will frustrate and disappoint gun control advocates who point out the huge number of firearms already circulating in American society as well as a seemingly never-ending cycle of mass shootings."

That leaves around 3% or c2,000 accidents.
In 2021 there were at least 259 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in 104 deaths and 168 injuries nationally. That is over 7 times more than the total amount of gun related murders in the UK. London hasn't had a gun related murder for over 6 months and the rate has dropped from high of 15 in 2018 to zero so far this year.
FWIW in the UK there an average 0.2 gun related deaths per 100,000 people per year, in the US it is 12.2. Only a handful of countries have a higher rate.
Your claim that more people would die as a result of gun control is ludicrous in the extreme. Anyway no-one is talking about taking guns away from people, just restricting access to assault rifles, sub-machine guns, heavy machine guns and the like and maybe stopping people who are ill suited to carry guns from getting them.

I don't recall Ted Cruz campaigning for or against changes to the speed limits, but I could be wrong. Your post equated the two statements, so to most people it would appear that you concur.
Perhaps before taking anything that Cruz or any other Trump fanboy/girl says at face value it might be an idea to actually dig out a few facts first and then form an opinion. In most cases it would be a million miles from their point of view.
Worth noting also that in the 2016 GOP primaries Trump called Cruz's wife ugly and yet still Cruz kisses Trumps ar%e. If that doesn't tell you what sort of man he is nothing will.

some of it was my own opinion yes , the quick fix bit was mine , to be honest this whole thing flies over my head , you allow guns this is normal , i mean if guns were legal over here i'd be wearing bullet proof vest and carrying 2 guns at least 🙄

Over here, a chump from Market Drayton has been arrested for attempted armed robbery at Hodnet stores and armed robbery at the Adastra stores, Tern Hill. Took the police about 5 minutes, probably waving a toy gun anyway. In addition though, "Armed police stopped traffic and swarmed a sports car at Heathgates roundabout Shrewsbury to arrest two men suspected to be involved in an attempted robbery (in Wellington). One man, aged 32, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm. A second man, aged 33, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery".
And, of course, in America there had to be a case that backed up the pro gun lobbie's views with a potential mass killing stopped by a quick thinking women with a gun - "A US woman has fatally shot a man who opened fire on a crowd of people with a semi-automatic rifle in Charleston, West Virginia. Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old with an extensive criminal history, was killed after he targeted a group of around 40 people attending a birthday party. Police spokesman Tony Hazelett said the woman's quick reaction saved lives and may have prevented a mass shooting".
First question has to be where did a 37 year old with an extensive criminal hustory get a semi-automatic?

I don't know what is scarier, us having automatic weapons legalised or postmen roaming the streets armed to the teeth with assault rifles and body armour.

The US is probably too far gone for everyone to be required to disarm, but compulsory background checks, higher age limits for guns than for beer & not selling semi-automatic weapons don't seem like draconian measures to me. It's too easy to do nothing. A country that can't act to protect its own children is dysfunctional & degenerate.

Every mass gunman is a law abiding citizen - until their first offence. All this tosh from Trump and Cruz about denying law abiding citizens the right to hold guns. You never know who will become a mass murderer with guns. Who’s to say that the armed teacher won’t turn his gun on his pupils? There is so many holes in their logic and arguments but we all know this on here.

I find it strange that Texas republicans are suggesting that teachers should be trusted with guns in their workplace, while in the next breath saying that teachers can't be trusted with the choice of reading material for their students.
I wasn't going to respond to Pilch and his hilarious post about giving 7 year olds assault rifles, but I can't help myself, so here's my advice. Before you actually click on the create post button, STOP, THINK is this post going make you look like an utter plonker, then DELETE what you intended to post. Simple.
I know that you may think you're being witty or clever, but on this subject there is never a call for someone to inject humour, 19 children died FFS.

I don't think anyone is actually calling for a total ban on guns, even though that policy has worked remarkably well in the UK and in Australia, so does have merit. All most sensible people want is fair regulation. In the US as here and almost every country in the world you need to show at least some competency to drive a car. In the US as in the UK you need a licence to go fishing. In some states in the US you can turn up at a gun shop with one form of ID and walk away the same day with a weapon designed to kill people. No checks, no training, nothing. Tell me how that makes sense.

If those are the opinions that you put up on this board then hell yes I will shout you down, but not with opinions, with facts. Perhaps you could point any points I have made that are not factual. Just to clear up the facts v opinions debate you understand?

Secondly the post ''its like raising the speed limit over here , no one will do it because every future death will be pinned on them
same as guns over there, all the law abiding people hand over their guns, all the criminals keep theirs and more people get robbed, raped, or die'' made no reference to anything other than your opinion. The Ted Cruz defence only came out later after you were picked up on it.
Lastly where have I claimed that you said guns should be commonplace. I actually said that ''should guns be commonplace in the UK that you would walk around with body armour and at least two guns', in reply to your statement that ''i mean if guns were legal over here i'd be wearing bullet proof vest and carrying 2 guns at least''.
Perhaps I should have made a clearer distinction, but I would hope for at least a basic grasp of the English language from you.

Here's the full quote for those that may have missed it ''Lastly where have I claimed that you said guns should be commonplace?''
Perhaps I was wrong to assume that you had the required language skills to understand that the sentence '' that should guns be commonplace in the UK that you would walk around with body armour and at least two guns '' means exactly the same as 'if guns were to become commonplace in the UK that you would walk around with body armour and at least two guns''. I accept that I could and perhaps should have made it simpler and clearer for you.
I really don't want get bogged down in the semantics of who said what and what was misunderstood, because life is quite frankly to short.
Have a delightful day owd lad.

I'm not the one who can't understand the English language, I've explained everything twice to you and you've still not grasped it Nice piece of selective quoting there Pilch.
[br you obviously don't understand english at all owd chap , your interpretation of clear comments are bizarre , pathetic and beyond belief

Biden comforting and showing compassion to parents who lost their children. Cruz comforting and commiserating with a sheriff who has seen his men shown up as cowards and charlatans.
