Respect but shouldn't even be newsworthy in this day and age.
Liverpool fans will probably boo him if they draw Blackpool in the cup next season
Because well Thatcher.

Absolutely ridiculous state of affairs that it's even a news story.
Focus on your football son, don't worry about the knuckle draggers out there.

Good luck to the lad, I hope he gets the support he needs during what will surely be an intrusive few months before people forget and treat him like just another young footballer trying to make his way in the game. Meanwhile, in other news: www.joe.co.uk/amp/sport/idrissa-gueye-rainbow-shirt-336019

Why’s this news?! He’ll now be known as “Jake Daniels the gay footballer” instead of “Jake Daniels the footballer” the media in this country are a joke

I'm still really, really wound up about this. It's 2022, there's some absolute tossers in the world.
First openly gay "current" footballer since 1990, what a joke of a sporting culture in reality.

It's the backwards attitudes that have stopped any gay footballer of the last 30 years from feeling able to do the same that are the joke.

He made a statement.. so why was it headline news last night? He made a statement/gave an interview to Sky Sports News, ie the media. It's news because he's the first pro-footballer in 30 years to come out as gay. The last one who did killed himself. Why do you think it shouldn't be headline news?

Really couldn't care less about a players sexual orientation. If you're good at football you could be attracted to watermelons for all I care.
With that said I fully expect a massive outcry as soon as a set of opposition fans mention it.
I also wonder how his teammates would handle this. I know its 2022 but what's the difference between a gay man changing/showering with men and a man changing/showering in the women's dressing room!?

I agree a small percentage of the usual Knuckle Draggers will try and make something of it whilst the vast majority won’t even think about it in a couple of weeks… The media will keep him on a pedestal as a shining example of a brave young man while the majority will just get on with life. As for the last question I’d like to think he’ll just be treated like any other team member, I don’t know but would think group showers and baths are a thing if the past especially now with Covid…….

I think Pughy thinks because he's gay the sight of a couple of half naked blokes will send him mad, he'll automatically fancy them all or something daft. I'd imagine his teammates couldn't give a toss and are proud of him.

I find the reaction to this kind of thing weird.
It harks back on a personal level to when my best friend came out in the first year of college when attitudes were much different.
It shouldn't be front page news but at the same time anyone who replies "who cares?" is missing the point a bit as well.
We've also got the usual suspects on here with their self-fulfilling prophecies about how 'knuckle draggers' and 'neanderthals' might react. And with that I fear people will actively seek and want there to be some kind of negative response to this to gratify their own self-righteousness.
The whole 'stunning and brave' thing has become parodied and essentially lost all meaning. But coming out and breaking the mould thus helping rid the game of what's left of the stigma attached to sexuality is of course commendable.
I guess the closest thing to saying the 'right thing' in my opinion is just to say I wish him all the best.

No, but I think people are very quick to show off their moral grandstanding by focusing on what would be a tiny minority of people rather than the overwhelming show of support that Daniels has already received.

I don't see anyone focusing on that, there's just a legitimate concern for the continued well being of a courageous lad who, when all's said and done, is still only 17. But sure, call it moral grandstanding from the do-gooders if that gets you going.

Why’s this news?! He’ll now be known as “Jake Daniels the gay footballer” instead of “Jake Daniels the footballer” the media in this country are a joke I really hope you are wrong. Steven Davies, now playing for Somerset, came out 11 years ago, the first professional cricketer to do so. To the best of my knowledge, his sexual orientation has not been mentioned since. Football needs to handle this story in a grown up 21st Century manner and move on, following cricket’s example. If there are incidents of homophobic chanting or individuals shouting abuse, then the people concerned (and the club, if there is a repeat instance) should be punished, as happens in cases of racism. As others have said, this is not a media witch-hunt, it was Jake’s brave decision to go public. I wish him a long and successful career, .

He made a statement.. so why was it headline news last night? For the same reason you’ve posted twice it’s topical and the reactions been positive with most saying the same ‘why’s it news’ …. Folk like to be holier than thou but with 5000+ professional footballers this is the first announcement in 30+ years although on average 1 in 16 men in the UK are gay no one’s been brave enough for a long time….. The fact he’s brave enough is the news and the fact 1000s of others haven’t felt they could just adds to the storey. Shouldn't be that way but the facts are it has been for too long.
