Definitely lacking pace now and apparently opponents are targeting him. Set pieces still brilliant though, but no longer a Steve Cotterill type of target. Never was. You could well be right there.

Well done to him. Nine seasons is quite something. Why ever was he let go, one of the worst decisions ever.

Don’t think we’ve had a testimonial here for 25 years?

Don’t think we’ve had a testimonial here for 25 years? Who was the last one? I remember one for Malcolm Starkey in the late 90s, but that wasnt a recognised player (from around that time). Before that there was one for Bob Wardle, Bernard McNally and I think a benefit game for Dick Pratley after he had to retire injured. I know Colin Griffin never got one which caused I'll feeling. Which others have I missed?

Releasing JJ was one of the worst decisions we have made as a club in years (on recruitment anyway)

Why the devil are people talking about Starkey’s testimonial being in the 90s. How does that square with Ryan Lowe doing serious bits in the Villa match if he didn’t join us until this century?
It’s like people have all the evidence in front of them to crack the case and have just hurled it into the dustbin.

Has he retired now? That own goal is etched in my memory! It was like time stood still as the ball trickled over the line!

Which others have I missed? The Starkey one I believe was against a half decent Nottingham Forest side. The only other one I personally attended was Arthur Rowley's against Wolves in the mid 90s - and again it was a pretty strong wolves side including Steve Bull and about three different players wearing the number 9 shirt which confused a very young me. Pretty sure Paul 'Eagle' Edwards and Mickey Brown were released ahead of what would have been their testimonial year, and rumours were that the financial burden was part of the reason for them being let go. Don't know how true that is. Considering how long Rowley waited for his, I don't think it's too late for the club to do something for Colin Griffin.

In the 60s which was before my time. I've got a booklet which I'm sure was his testimonial. The 1995 one was an extra one (bet Griffin was well impressed.....).

Didn't he also have a 2nd testimonial ? I can vaguely remember something happening as he had apparently fallen on hard times , I remember him taking a round of applause at the meadow, he was stood in the stands and looked quite frail

Shabby treatment of Paul Edwards to release him at the end of his 9th season, I don' know how testimonials work but thought that most of the money comes from the fans and that the player organises fund raising events. Mickey Brown had broken service and didn't do 10 consecutive years, considering he left a bad taste when he left us for Preston I'm not sure how much support a testimonial for him would have had. Rowley indeed had 2 testimonials and as one of our most distinguished players and managers deserved them. The first one was a bit of a con though as Stanley Matthews was advertised as playing. He didn't and it's said there was no chance of him doing so as he and Arthur didn't get on. I have the programmes from both games and so have it in print that 'the wizard of the dribble' played at Gay Meadow.

Ah yes you're quite right. I remember attending the Musgrove one as well. We've definitely not had one at the new ground then, the closest being either the Joe Hart return friendly v Man City or that 'Pro Star All Stars' game. Very much overdue one.
