It’s mad that I wasn’t even aware of this disaster until an episode of The Crown was centred on it. Truly horrific.

Awful day the news real was just awful as a 13 year old I’ll never forget it. Up there with the sheer terror of 07/11

On one of our recent away days to Newport the following day I my daughter and her friend to Aberfan.
We did the memorial, the graveyard and had a walk around the village. It was her who reminded me of the anniversary; she's now a Primary School teacher herself. The visit had a profound affect on her and her friend.

Aberfan was dreadful. I cannot imagine what they went through. The ones who died, their loved ones and the ones who survived. How on earth do you live with something like that? Shrewsbury of course had its own disaster. Not something you hear much of, not even locally, but I bet it was headline news back in the day en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrewsbury_rail_accident

When I was about 11 my dad me with him on a haulage trip down to South Devon.
We headed down through mid Wales on what is now the A470 until we got to the heads of the valley road. At that time the A470 road improvements had not taken place so you went through Merthyr (past the Hoover and Triang factories) and then onto Aberfan.
As we approached Aberfan you could see all the white crosses on the hill. My dad was of a generation that didn't show emotion but as he pointed them out to me his voice began to crack and there were tears in his eyes. To this day I've never forgotten that moment, the look on my dad's face told me all I needed to know about that terrible event.
It was a tragedy that should never ever have happened.

No Island there now but there was a cut made to take the bend out of the river for navigation making an Island where I think fairs and later the first flower show place. The bridge collapse due to the number of people crossing leaving many dead. Strangly can’t find any references online but there’s a plaque beyond Frankwell cricket pitches on the river bank describing the disaster.

A very interesting youtube channel that features terrible incidents, a lot of which I had not heard of beforehand including this one. This is an interesting (I can't use the word good about such an appalling tragedy) one about Aberfan. No accountability?!
