Came across an article about a Scot playing for Club Brugge in the Champions League (against City tonight), and was amazed to learn he'd been on loan at Shrewsbury. Jack Hendry is a player I'd completely forgotten, and barely recall now, but he played 6 games for us at the end of Mellon's 2015/16 League 1 survival season, on loan from Wigan. He moved to Dundee, then Celtic, and ended up at Oostende in Belgium, before Brugge paid £6m for him this summer. He's also a Scotland international and was man of the match when Brugge drew with PSG in the Champions League. www.theguardian.com/football/2021/oct/18/jack-hendry-interview-manchester-city-club-brugge-champions-leagueGot me wondering - how many other ex-Shrewsbury players have appeared in the Champions League (or European Cup)? Joe Hart presumably & Dan James just about qualifies. Any more?

Do I remember reading somewhere that Benny Gall (useless keeper from the 90s) was on the bench a while back for a danish team?

Do I remember reading somewhere that Benny Gall (useless keeper from the 90s) was on the bench a while back for a danish team? Benny wasn’t always rubbish, he played heroically in a win at Burnley, start of the 1986/87 season I think. Also a lad whose name I forget had a terrific game at centre back, the story was that he’d been scouted when playing Sunday league in London. After the game I may have written here that I’d seen our first choice ‘keeper for the foreseeable future Sadly it was then rapidly downhill for both of them, which leads me to think about other players who had one special game before their careers collapsed. Karl Murray at Sheffield United and Steve Leslie at Lincoln come to mind.

From memory he was a young lad we got from London and the club had made a big deal out of the fact we had lured him to Shrewsbury as he had a lucrative job in London, strange what you remember. Speaking of which, my only memory of Benny Gall is him rolling round in laughter seeing a friend of mine getting stuck in a tree whilst attempting to retrieve a football during a training session at SCAT.

Any ex players that have appeared for Welsh or Irish sides in CL qualifying? Or other smaller countries? Must be 1 or 2 somewhere along the line

Hendry tried his best but Bruges were absolutely run ragged by a majestic city 5-1 and it could have been a cricket score.

Chukwuemeka Nwadike was another of that era who had a couple of good games at centre back and then faded fast

Any more? the chap I was on about was Steve ogrizovic, 2 winners medals for sitting on the bench , fair play to him, I wouldn't like it on my cv to say I played a part in their wins either

Dont forget some people actually beleive football only goes back to 91/2, and not before.

Very inexperienced/unbalanced team, obviously we ended up losing.

When Liverpool played TNS there must have been a handful of ex players in there.
Martyn Naylor would be one, and Scott Ruscoe and John Leah are from Shrewsbury though don’t think they were ever in our system

I've had a bit of a look around a few players that sprung to mind, and found a few that played in europe - although mostly in uefa/europa rather than champions league, and some prior to joining town rather than after. Only one I actually found who had played in champions league was Zak Whitbread (and that was only qualifying).
ainsworth - europa league motherwell graham burke - europa league/europa conference league for Shamrock Rovers docherty - europa league for Rangers iliev was on bench for Arsenal leutwiler was on bench for basel Shelis - europa league for APOEL omer riza - uefa cup Ian Woan - uefa cup for Nottm Forest whitbread - did play for liverpool in champions league at start of his career

I read that Sheilis is now a full international for Cyprus.
