A hospital doctor who performed CPR on a stricken Newcastle United fan has admitted that hearing thousands of Gallowgate End fans chanting “hero” was one of the best moments of his life.
Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur was stopped in the first half for about 20 minutes as it became clear there was a medical emergency in the stands. Tom Prichard, an A&E consultant at the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, was identified as one of the people who helped save the elderly Newcastle fan’s life. He took over performing CPR on the unnamed man who had gone into cardiac arrest.
This incident reminded me of the Bury fan who suffered a heart attack outside our ground.

A Bury FC supporter was in a stable condition in hospital on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest outside a stadium.
Paramedics and first aiders had to restart Brian Allen’s heart after he collapsed near the away turnstiles at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow at about 1.55pm last Saturday, February 4.
After his condition deteriorated, emergency services had to carry out advanced life support before he was rushed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by ambulance.
His condition was described as ‘critical’ at the weekend, but he has now been moved off the critical list.

Mansfield goalkeeping coach Peter Wilson has died after suffering a heart attack at Saturday's League Two match against Shrewsbury.
The coach had spent 10 minutes warming up Mansfield's goalkeepers ahead of the Gay Meadow meeting when he collapsed.
He was taken to hospital and at 1445 GMT a stadium announcement confirmed that the match had been abandoned.
His death was confirmed by the Royal Shrewbury Hospital later on Saturday afternoon by doctors.
Connor Goldson has had his problems too, though thankfully like Ryan Bowman he's been able to continue with his career.
