don't forget Halifax 79/80 league cup first game of season 2-2. A bunch of Leeds fans rocked up and proceeded to start lobbing cans of cider at us. It was a bit amusing to see Sweeny catch one and take a swig but it then became bins and we hardly watched the game I went by car and we left sharpish and only found out later in the Star that some off the coach were chased and took shelter over a wall only to find is was a steep railway embankment and I think there were some nasty injuries. I am surprised Grizzly has not mentioned the notorious Luton night game when Smithy took a pasting. Luton was a black evening following Town. Town fans attacked in their own pen by Luton "fans" jumping the fence as we equalised, but their quality shine threw as they sent up to the old First division. What happened in Toddingon really wasnt anything to do with football, but a significant evening following Town. Real scary with some of their neanderthols about. Real 80s hooliganism at it its worst. Memories that wont ever fade away.

Exeter away mid 90's abandoned at half time did to a downpour and waterlogged pitch, absolutely soaked on the open terrace, we were still wet when we got back to Shrewsbury. I was there too. Would have posted exactly like you, that and the Brighton games must be the wettest I've ever been at a match. Closely followed by Northampton away early 90s. We also made the awful decision to go to the midweek return game later on in the season, think we lost 3-0!

A friend of mine and a long time supporter of the Town told me of a trip he made to see the lads at Millwall ( could have been West Ham but whatever , one of the two ) .He and his mates and a fair few others were let into an area of the ground and all was well , the game started and he settled down to watch. After a while a whistle was blown and to his surprise people around him started to put on balaclava type coverings . He thought wtf is happening , he soon found out as those around him witthout the balaclava’s ( including himself of course ) were attacked severely . He managed to escape further beatings as the Police intervened and he and a lot of bruised , battered and bewildered people were put into another “ safe” area. He has never experienced anything like it since and has no desire to repeat the experience. A day out that will stick long in his memory . Probably not the same game but it brings to mind my only trip to the Den when we played them in the cup ( think we were one division higher than them ) and got absolutely slaughtered 5-1. Towards the end the linesman collapsed on the touch line in front of the Milwall fans and it was later reported he was felled by a lump of concrete thrown from the crowd.

If I remember right it was there first time in a few years they were allowed to play at home in the fa cup after trouble in a cup tie v Ipswich where they lost 6-1 ( possibly the season Ipswich won the cup ), until then if they were drawn at home the fixture was reversed

At Millwall it wasn’t just the away fans who were targeted . A former physio for the Town told me of a trip to the old Den I think in the Harry Cripps era when he was called upon to enter the field of play . Returning to the dugout his attention was directed to his jacket . The back of it was covered in spit . Obviously as he returned to the dugout along the touch line the Millwall Neanderthals took the opportunity to gob at him .

Boston away, not only did we lose 6-0 and the worst performance I’ve seen in over 50 years, but on returning to my car, the passenger window had been smashed and radio removed, and I had to drive back to Nottingham on a dark December evening with the wind howling in.

Just remembered another one, Chesterfield away, I think it was not long after Peters had gone. I had gone on a minibus but two of us got separated from the rest of the group, we got into the ground and went in the open terrace behind the goal but realised everyone off the bus had gone in the seats. Of course it hammers down and I think there was a hail storm, we tried to move to the seats but the stewards refused, much to the laughter of our friends in the seats. I think it was 0-0 at half but they scored 3 times quickly in the second half, we left, went to a nearby pub and discovered a lot of the town fans had already had the same idea. That’s the one I was trying to remember, wasn’t there an overhanging tree we tried to get under for protection against the hail? There have been so many drenches on open terraces over the years. I think that might have been Mansfield, a game I mentioned on an earlier post. That was during the Jake years, a 4 nil defeat on a Friday night and we were on a small terrace on the side. I'm sure we were trying to find places for shelter in that game

Luton away was a bad night, got left in Toddington that night (my fault) didn’t arrive home until Saturday afternoon, definitely a trip to forget, not all the trouble in Toddington that night was football related but was instigated by another incident, certainly will never be forgotten.

Those on the coach didnt get home till after 4am, had to wait for ages while someone was being looked at at the local hospital. Crazy scenes.

Macclesfield, Exeter in Conference and a more recent trip to Accrington also spring to mind as regards soakings. Results wise, Huston, Blyth and the thrashing at Dagenham were pretty dire as was the 7 at Chesterfield in the Mellon era..

Funny really, because reading this thread and thinking back actually just reveals what an utterly brilliant time I've had, even the rubbish games have been an experience in their own right, and for every rubbish game there's a 4-2 at Bramall Lane, or a 2-0 at The Valley, or a 'two goals in stoppage time' 2-1 win at Darlington, plus many others, all games that will live long in my memory. Oh so bloody true....the real joys of supporting STFC: those terrible games make the occasional great days or seasons taste much sweeter!

Mention of Millwall reminds this old geezer of being there when we won 2-1 in the fourth round in 64/5; it was my father's only ever away game - he wasn't a football fan at all - because he wanted to see the funeral of Winston Churchill.

What's your worst away game either watching one of the billions of terrible efforts of our blue and amber heroes or any other team. A good mate of mine here in Whitchurch is a Man. Utd fan who years ago when football violence was at its sadly most prevalent decided to hitch hike to London on a Saturday morning to watch them against Arsenal. He started thumbing it at about 6 am and unbelievably got a ride straight away in a wagon which was heading about an hour away from the ground. He also liked a sherbert or 10 and found a boozer at about 11 in the morning and proceeded to get leathered. Aston Villa were also playing in North London that day and one of their fans and my mate ( let's call him Huggy Beach as that is his name ) had a somewhat heated disagreement. Huggy did not win the exchange and promptly got stabbed in the stomach but not too badly thankfully. Hospital beckons and he missed the game which United lost so then had to get home. He finds himself on an underground which fills up with West Ham fans coming home. He has his scarf on and not only being stabbed now gets his head kicked in the jammy git. I can't quite match his good luck but my worst night out was watching the town at Mansfield on a Friday night during the Gary Peters era. We hadn't lost in 7 ( some kind of record ?? ) and they hadn't won in 8 so it was bound to go well. We had Joe Hart in goal so all was fine. We were predictably abysmal and got dicked four nil. I got home about half twelve and had to be in work at half four and was suitably knackered for the rest of the day. So what's your biggest waste of time following the beautiful game ??
