Not sure to be honest but sounds like the extreme hot weather and the cold water is a cause. All very sad for all those involved. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-57884739

Probably the fact it's filthy these days! I swam in it back in 2019 and it was clean. If there are kingfishers by the river then that is a sign that it is clean. Speaking as somebody who swims in open water on a regular basis I would say you need to know your limit and know the body of water you are swimming in.

One near me in the Weaver Navigation near the Swing Bridge on the A56. Similar events all over the country.

Do we just hear more about drownings with 24 hour media coverage? I am sure a few slipped away quietly in the "good old days".

Some kids are, frankly, stupid! I actually saw a kid swimming in the middle of the river today as I drove down Smithfield road, there was an adult close by in a rowing boat but neither had life jackets on

I went for a swim at Alderford Lake this morning. The water was about 23 degrees C. A mix of wetsuit clad and swimsuit only.
I really think that there is a shortage of good open water swimming venues in the UK. Especially when you think that in Sweden lake swimming is very common.
