I thought Boris and aides were masters of the simplistic brain dead slogans, but PM4PM beats them all. There must be someone better than her?

The only thing I can ever think of when Liz Truss is mentioned is Pork markets... For anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Tory leadership contender Nadhim Zahawi has said he would be prepared to offer Boris Johnson a seat in Cabinet if he wins the race for No 10. The Chancellor told LBC Radio: “Boris Johnson is a friend of mine of 30 years. If he wishes to serve in Cabinet, I would certainly offer him a job. “He has been probably the most consequential Prime Minister of his generation. He has delivered Brexit.” Surely that's Zahawi finished. Presumably a pathetic attempt to get Johnson supporters like Rees Mogg and Dorries onside. Hope he’s shot himself in the foot with that one. Presumably, as a friend, he’d also offer him some PPE contracts too. Isn’t that how it works?

Last few posts indicate that these morons don't actually review what they are going to say and think about how it will be perceived.

I do hope the Tory party realise this and wave him off straight away. Certainly another one not fit for purpose. People are judged by the company they keep and he’s just been judged as far as I am concerned.

PMQs today. A man with no shame and a braying mob shamelessly backing him up even though most wanted him gone. And these are the people who are deemed fit to run the country by a majority of the electorate and who will be voting on the next incumbent. Heaven help us.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/17/zahawi-urged-to-explain-source-of-26m-mystery-loansThe chancellor Nadhim Zahawi is under pressure to explain the source of £26m of unsecured loans reported by his family property firm in 2018 as he faces questions over his tax affairs. The millions of pounds of loans helped Zahawi and his wife buy properties across Britain, including commercial and retail premises in London, Birmingham, Brighton and Walton-on-Thames in Surrey.

Dominic Raab had been due to appear before the Joint Committee on Human Rights next Wednesday to give evidence on his highly contentious Bill of Rights but pulled out saying he would attend a session in the autumn instead. Presented with a golden opportunity to explain and justify his own legislation, seemingly designed to take away our human rights and ease the operation of his government’s Rwanda policy, Mr Raab decided instead to run away and hide. Presumably, he now has his fingers crossed that he is moved to a new job in the post-leadership-election reshuffle.
Priti Patel too had been due to face scrutiny last week, in her case from the Home Affairs Committee on Wednesday morning. But she showed utter contempt for Parliament and her own civil servants by cancelling just hours before the hearing was due to start. Even when the Chair of that Committee, Dame Diana Johnson MP, wrote to ask her to reconsider, Mrs Patel would not budge. An enormous amount of work is done to prepare a minister for one of these hearings, by the civil servants in Priti Patel’s department, by the MPs and clerks on the committee, and by Patel herself…all wasted. Like Dominic Raab, I am sure Priti Patel is banking on being reshuffled before the next hearing is convened.
Open Britain.

A couple of days after Boris Johnson resigned, I was told by a wealthy Tory donor that the big business backers had decided they wanted Liz Truss to win. Why? Because she's the one they think would be easiest to manipulate.
I now look on with incredulity as prominent Eurosceptics from the ERG group endorse the Truss campaign and their friends in the press launch an all-out assault on Penny Mordaunt, whose inconsistencies have proved to be her undoing.
Given that we have a Stop Rishi campaign, it seems clear to me that Truss will make it through to the last two and will subsequently win with the membership. Just think of it. A Remain-voting, former card-carrying and conference-speaking member of Liberal Democrats, who once endorsed Republicanism, a woman who voted for May's disastrous deal three times, will likely lead the Conservative Party and post-Brexit Britain. You simply couldn't make it up. It is possible that she now believes in dealing with the Northern Ireland protocol and genuine conservatism, but I doubt it. All I see here is a careerist. How did it come to this?
Her public performances are weak to the point of being laughable (just look at her reading out her closing statement last night) and she will not connect with the electorate. I think that the Conservative Party is in much bigger trouble than it understands.

In terms of PR, why anyone in the Tory party thought these leadership debates doing the rounds on TV were a good idea is beyond me.
Pretty obvious you'd end up with an Apprentice style boardroom scene where despite saying the right things initially, each candidate would eventually succumb to trying to chuck every one else under the bus to save their skin.
It's not even like the general public will have a say on who the leader will be.
An absolute sh*tshow really though I did enjoy Liz Truss' putdown of privileged rick kid Sunak. Wiped the smirk off his face.

Penny Mordaunt’s campaign has criticised the decision by Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss not to take part in the Sky TV debate that had been planned for tomorrow. Mordaunt has blamed Sunak and Truss for not being able to debate each other “in a civil way”.
🚨 Statement from Team Mordaunt: “It’s a shame some colleagues cannot find a way to debate one another in a civil way.
“Throughout this contest she has never dodged media or shied away from broadcast interviews and debates - people deserve to hear from their leaders.”
The Penny Mordaunt campaign has said a statement on the cancellation of the Sky News debate released earlier, which blamed Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss for not being able to debate each other “in a civil way”, was sent out in error. It has retracted that statement, and instead issued this comment which does not not criticise her rivals. A campaign spokesperson said:
"Media scrutiny is important in this contest. Penny has done broadcast and allowed time for journalists to ask questions at her launch. MPs aren’t just picking a new leader, but picking the nation’s new PM. Penny hopes there will be ample opportunity for such scrutiny later in the contest in a format that allows detailed questions and insights".
Pathetic! The original statement seems to be far nearer the mark.

Rishi Sunak was today accused of peddling a 'fairytale' over the effectiveness of his Covid loan schemes as he faced fresh anger for allowing billions of pounds to be lost to fraud. Lord Agnew, who quit as a Treasury minister in January, today tore into Mr Sunak's record as Chancellor as he accused Mr Sunak of frittering away taxpayers' cash. He also claimed the public had been left 'completely in the dark' about the extent of taxpayers' money being lost through Covid schemes. Lord Agnew accused Mr Sunak of having 'blocked' data about the performance of Covid loans from being published during his time as Treasury chief. The Conservative peer bemoaned how an estimated £5billion lost to fraud - through the bounceback loans scheme for small and medium-sized businesses - could have instead been spent on helping the poorest during the cost-of-living crisis.

He's right though isn't he. Sunak doesn't seem to be as clever as he thinks he is. In addition, remember "eat out to help out"? How many more Covid cases did that cause? How many jobs did it save? Some clarity on the costs, as the noble lord states, would be useful. With Sunak, one minute it was spend, spend, spend, now it's the highest tax government for many years. Shouldn't we be clear about the figures? The ppe, the jobs saved, maybe it was all worth it, but Sunak doesn't seem to want to show us the figures to prove it was.
