www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/shrewsbury-town-fc/2021/05/07/prudent-planning-and-chairmans-rainy-day-fund-has-helped-shrewsbury-town-survive-pandemic"Chief executive Brian Caldwell admits Shrewsbury have been fortunate to rely on the ‘rainy day fund’ built up over many years by chairman Roland Wycherley to survive the pandemic. caldwell admits he hopes that ‘common sense prevails’ and Shrewsbury will welcome supporters back for the start of the 2021/22 season. Town are focusing their efforts behind the scenes on recovering from 14 months of little to no income due to Covid-19. The Town chief admits Shrewsbury have needed to, reluctantly, break into the reserves built up over a number of years by chairman Wycherley and his prudent running of the club. But, with supporters set to return to stadia in some capacity during this summer’s delayed Euro 2020 tournament in Britain, Caldwell is holding out for supporters to be in place in time for Steve Cotterill’s side to get next season underway on August 7. “As a football club we’ve been extremely difficult, over the years the chairman has built up good reserves for us to have a rainy day fund, that money was always for the future to invest and help the club long term,” Caldwell told Shropshire Council’s Invest in Shropshire show. “The last thing we wanted to do was use it all up and haemorrhage the money but we have done in the last 13 or 14 months to continue playing and trying to survive."

www.shropshirestar.com/sport/football/shrewsbury-town-fc/2021/05/08/shrewsbury-town-stars-to-discuss-futures-with-boss-steve-cotterill/"Shrewsbury Town players are set for talks with manager Steve Cotterill regarding future plans following tomorrow’s League One finale at Crewe Town see out the campaign with the short trip to The Alexandra Stadium tomorrow lunchtime, where the returning boss will again watch from the stands, rather than the dugout. The fixture is likely to be the last game in Town colours for a number of the existing squad, with as many as 14 senior players out of contract. Cotterill has not yet spoken directly with his troops about whether or not they are a part of his plans for next season, which will be his first full season in charge at Montgomery Waters Meadow. It is thought there will be big change within the squad as Town eye improvement on a relegation battle. Talks are planned for Wednesday, before the squad and staff disperse for their summer break. Players will typically be on holiday throughout much of June. Cotterill and his Town head of recruitment Keith Burt have been setting plans for next season’s squad, with Shrewsbury having realistically secured their League One status a number of weeks ago.Question marks remain over several high-profile players, including Shaun Whalley, Ro-Shaun Williams, Sean Goss, Daniel Udoh and Dave Edwards – the latter revealed he would be open to a longer stay having considered retirement." I suppose not quite so much jetting off and signing players you have met on the plane this year? Maybe signing players you have met in Tenby or down the allotments?

Looking forward to radical change in the squad. Out of Whalley, WIlliams, Goss, Udoh and Edwards I would only keep Goss.

Conor McAleny is out of contract at Oldham...I thought he did ok for us when he was previously on loan. He certainly knows where the net is! Yeh, but apparently he chose Oldham over us last time, so maybe unlikely. Any player in the peak of their powers would not choose to come to STFC under Sam Ricketts to showcase their best years!

I see Ro-Shaun Williams posted an image on instagram yesterday of himself sitting in the training ground (presumably for the last time) with a sad face emoji. Make of that what you will. Released.

An excellent article in the Guardian. Thank you for posting it.
I suppose any thoughts that were on the table when SC first came will now have to be looked at in light of the Covid expense to the club and the fact that, because we were careful and had reserves, we can’t claim some of the funding. Ridiculous really when you would think that the authorities would want clubs to get back to as near normal as possible.
The enigma that is football’s authority never ceases to amaze, astound and anger.

The enigma that is football’s authority never ceases to amaze, astound and anger. A bit like someone with millions in the bank not being able to claim benefits I guess... Why should a bail out be given to a club that doesn’t need a bail out? Just because it’s Shrewsbury? Doesn’t seem fair from our view point I agree and I do wonder if the monies received by other clubs will be counted as income when setting their playing budget for next season depending when they receive it?

Agreed. I hope it is counted. It just seems that because we’ve been careful and not spent money we didn’t have we can’t get our balance back to where it was and be in the same financial position we were in pre covid or somewhere near anywhere.

Thought the same - the fact they’ve left him out the past month too made it clear. He’ll get himself signed up at a decent league 1 club but I don’t think he’s got the ability for the championship just yet

We couldn’t afford a tenth of Assombalonga’s wages. I mean I doubt he's on £40,000 a week, but yes your overall point is he's be heading upwards/across rather than down the leagues I'd imagine. He is on about that. Boro signed him the year they came down so had parachute payments. Absolutely no way he is coming here

Wonder if Bolton will come in for Norburn now they’ve been promoted Norburn is an interesting one. I would be relatively happy to see Davis & Vela as a midfield combination next season, maybe selling Norburn would help funds to strengthen elsewhere? He is one of only a handful of assets we have on the playing staff at the moment, Vela & Pierre being the others.

Norburn for me just doesn't do enough. He doesn't score that many, but take out penalties and it looks even worse.
Hopefully we can find a midfielder who can really run a game of football.

Norburn's playing further back in the midfield with Vela, people are then moaning Vela nor Norburn get enough goals doesn't get forward enough, that's due to the formation. Vela got the chance to play number 10 and come up with the goods, but hes playing very deep with Norburn. I am just having a look at Norburns stats, He is doing what has asked to do in the midfield and get stuck in and has the most tackles per 90 mins in our whole team. His work rate is pretty good and gets up and down quickly.

There's some pretty big names being bandied about. I'm expecting some under the radar players we've never heard off, like......oh I don't know........Ogbeta or something.

There's some pretty big names being bandied about. I'm expecting some under the radar players we've never heard off, like......oh I don't know........Ogbeta or something. I suppose you don't hire a Head of Recruitment to come up with names us fans would be able to come up with. As SC said on Keith Burt's appointment: “I worked with Keith Burt before when I was at Bristol City. I’ve worked closely with him for a number of years now. We have become good friends and I have a lot of time for him. “He will help recognise the type of player we want at the football club. There won’t need to be a dozen phone calls to find things out. Keith will be a big part of us recruiting players. “He will take a lot of weight away from me. He will be a great appointment for the club just like Aaron will be. Anyone I bring here will be good for the football club. “I won't have people here just because I like them. I like them both but professionally they have been first-class for me. The relationship comes secondary. We worked very well together and they will be very important."
