Ian St John another football legend has passed away after a long illness. Always enjoyed him as a TV pundit as well. RIP.

Oh me too. Another real character gone. I always remember the poster on a wall in Liverpool asking “What would you do if the Lord came” and someone had scrawled “move St John to inside left”. A fantastic player for Liverpool and very entertaining on the box, with his mate Greavsie , who is also in poor health now. Rest in Peace, Ian.

Saint and Greavsie, that does indeed bring back memories...
I really can't underestimate the impact these two chaps had on the number of Town games I attended way back in the day. If I was ever determined not to go, if ever I was umming and ahing, that all changed once I'd sat down and watched Saint and Greavsie. After that it was into the car, away we go and Up the Town!!
RIP

Remember watching a documentary about Liverpool in the late sixties and there was a church in the middle of Liverpool that had a big poster outside that said ‘what would you do if God came back to earth?’ Some wag had written underneath it ‘move St John to inside left.’ Brill.

There was also the story that on a church noticeboard in Liverpool proclaiming Jesus Saves someone had written underneath 'but St John knocks in the rebounds'.

He was playing when I was a kid and his was a name you wouldn't forget, but I don't remember him that well as a player.
Saint & Greavsie was perhaps the first time football broadcasting was approached with more of a comic touch, although they were serious pundits as well. It was such a good combination. Sad loss.

Fortunate enough to see him play a couple of times. RIP. As a boy I saw him a few times play at Wolves. He was an integral part of that formidable Liverpool team of the 60s, a very clever forward and a very good finisher.

Sad news indeed.
Loved watching Saint and Greavsie growing up in 80s.
They were a great double act and it was always funny seeing ISJ trying to act professionally whilst cracking up at Greavsie's antics.
RIP ISJ

I don't temember him playing but I did have a football card of him when I was a little kid - it came with some bubble gum. Interesting to see his goal per game ratio vs Roger Hunt. Was St John more a provider or was Roger Hunt an absolute animal?

Was St John more a provider or was Roger Hunt an absolute animal? For about a year when I was 6-7 (possibly less, a year was a lifetime at that age), I supported Liverpool. I think that was mainly because my dad always bought the Liverpool Echo football pink and I used to cut out the front page photos and put them in a scrapbook. Most of the photos seemed to be either Tommy Lawrence making a save or Roger Hunt or Chris Lawler scoring. That's probably why I don't remember St John too well as a player. Hunt always seemed to score and Lawler must have been the highest scoring full back around. Why I went for Liverpool rather than Everton I can't say.
