There is precious little 'loyalty' in the game today. Managers and players continually move clubs, sometimes voluntarily sometimes not. At the end of the day anyone playing or managing at a lower level should have ambitions to play at a higher one. What's wrong with that? Nothing at all wrong with that - if you leave in a dignified way rather than slither out under the door having been talking to your future employers for weeks when you should have been concentrating on matters a little more pressing for your current employers. At a Wrexham fans forum Rickettes denied talks with Shrewsbury (after he'd been connected in the press) and confirmed he was going nowhere just days before accepting a more lucrative job and Shrewsbury...... So he slithered out just like Hurst difference is Hurst had the decency to wait until the end of the season when Ricketts was talking to us just weeks into his first managerial job \ opportunity being given the chance by Wrexham.... Cant see any difference except its OK if our club benefits (debatable) So anyone climbing on their high horse critisising Hurst should consider if the can support Ricketts 'Ricketts was appointed as the manager of National League club Wrexham on 2 May 2018, being given a three-year contract.[44] The team won 1–0 at Dover Athletic on his managerial debut on 4 August.[45]
On 1 December 2018 he was told to stay away from Wrexham's FA Cup second round match against Newport County amid speculation he was poised to be appointed manager of League One side Shrewsbury Town, a local rival.[46] Wrexham were fourth in the table when he left.[47]'

My argument would be exactly the same with regard to SR. After Hurst nothing surprises me any more.

Oh **** off that's ridiculous. To the OP, ignore people like this. The bloke had an offer to double/triple his wages in the division above and did what anyone else in the world would do and went. No issues in him bettering himself, just how he did it. Totally underhand and never to be trusted again. People keep quoting this but you believe Brians version of events. Some of us have heard different. They knew he was going Ipswich long before they made out. Skitty was the real snake who "knew nothing" ... He knew plenty!

My argument would be exactly the same with regard to SR. After Hurst nothing surprises me any more. Footballing loyalty went about 10-15 years ago at least. You'll never see the likes of Neville, Giggs, Scholes Ferguson again and especially in the lower leagues you're highly unlikely to see any player or manager do five years plus.

Not long after Hurst came to us, a Telford season ticket holder friend of mine (unfortunate I know) who had seen Hurst as manager at Boston and Grimsby summed it up. He said he would make us organised, stronger defensively and improve the club, before walking out when a better offer comes along. Don't think he was too far off.
From a fans perspective, can see why people would want him back, but from an employer (club) perspective why would you go back to someone who has already walked out once. You can't really buy into a project if you know the employee will disappear when something better comes along. Nothing wrong with wanting to better himself, which is fair enough, but the way he went about it (Ipswich pretty much announced him at the end of March when they said they'd wait until the season was over) leaves a sense of distrust. Also the rumours that he did the same at Sc***horpe by talking to Peterborough.
I don't think anyone can say the 2017/18 wasn't enjoyable. I wouldn't necessarily say we were an entertaining team in the main, but winning football is always entertaining. We were a team greater than the sum of its parts, with 2 exceptional loan players in Henderson and Godfrey, plus another very good in Carlton Morris for the role he played. We outworked a lot of teams, got a lead and backed ourselves to defend it. Think most of us laughed at some of the time wasting antics of Henderson at times.
I feel teams worked us out the 2nd half of the season. I remember Rotherham and Plymouth outrunning us in home games in February, so we did well to stay in contention for so long. We benefitted from a largely settled team (which the current manager could learn from). Ogogo getting sent off at Northampton in March and his subsequent injury was the major turning point for me.
I would say that my views were based on the games that I saw, which was probably 30-35 of the league games. Unfortunately I seemed to miss the "highlight" games for various reasons, Wigan and Blackburn at home, Bristol Rovers, Charlton and Sc***horpe (snow game) away, which people pick out as summing up the season!
So back to the original point, Hurst would be a good short term manager to get a club back on the right track, but be wary about him sticking around long term.

That's a very good post, sums it / him perfectly and why many wouldnt want him anywhere near our club again. A different manager that could do a very similar job would be welcomed, just not him.

Hi all, Paul Hurst is being strongly linked with a move to us to be appointed next week Just wondering what your thoughts on him are? Style of play etc We have a very good squad for league two - better than we had in league one last season- so he will have some talent to work with Hopefully he can get more out of them than Jackson managed Do you think that Ian Dawes and Andy Parkinson are in with a shout? If Hurst does become your manager then I assume he will want Chris Doig in as his assistant so where will that leave Dawes and Parkinson.

Best advice would allow him a go. He came from here and came to us (ITFC) and got out of his depth in a very short time. A leap of two leagues at the time and wasn't quite prepared for the demands of a higher level.
That's not to say it wouldn't work for him elsewhere. Trying again in League Two could really work for him he's got the experience of managing at lower level but would he be a success, that's open to debate. Tranmere have got little to lose in the league they are now so why not give him a go if possible.

My argument would be exactly the same with regard to SR. After Hurst nothing surprises me any more. Yet you \ we supported him as our manager just like Ipswich fans supported Hurst to start with. Now we don't like them although we were no better....and Hurst is being portrayed as the antichrist Think you've guessed I'd have him back

I wouldn't begrudge anyone leaving Town and heading off someplace to further their career. We all know where Town lie in the pecking order and players, manager, staff would be daft not to take the opportunity. That Hurst left isn't an issue for me. However, when you look back at those final weeks and the truly awful performance we put in at the play off...well I would question his professionalism. There was of course no guarantee that we would win but it was a dire performance, absolutely cr@p, not a patch on anything we had seen throughout the majority of the season. So no issue that he went but it does grate that he seems to have given up on us as soon as he knew he were off.
That said, wouldn't be too arsed if he did ever come back. If he can help us win more games than lose then I'll be alright with that.

Lots of nonsense being posted about Hurst.
Who else would turn down a pay increase of several hundred thousand pounds a year with a guaranteed life changing sum of money even if you failed?
And how many if they were negotiating the said pay increase would tell their existing employer before it was signed?
That Hurst season produced the hardest working and most organised Shrewsbury side I've ever seen.
It was grim at times, and we only really thrashed one team all season, but at times we genuinely looked unbeatable.
Remember Fleetwood at home in the winter, gritty lower league 0-0 every day of the week then Toto nods in from a corner and the West stand went wild. But we'd been singing the Ben Godfrey song for about the previous half hour. It was already close to a party atmosphere before we even scored.
We've never had that before. Not that level of belief.
We got within one LJL lapse of concentration of the championship and he made us over £2 million in transfer fees as well as his own compensation.
You only have to look at how some of our best players of that season have fared outside of Hurst's tactics and motivation and you see what he did achieve. Sprinkle in the quality of Henderson and Godfrey and my only fear is we will never see the likes of it again. I'm not sure I'll ever see us do better in my lifetime.

I would rather get relegated under Ricketts than see Hurst back here. Oh **** off that's ridiculous. To the OP, ignore people like this. The bloke had an offer to double/triple his wages in the division above and did what anyone else in the world would do and went. i would rather peter winkleman buy us out and relocate us on the banks of the river mersey and allow free entry to anyone wearing a shellsuit seriously he could have been outright open about it, said all the right words even if he didnt mean them etc had he done so he'll probably be our manager again now and not one fan would even be frowning about it hindisght eh ;-)

Left the Academy to go and manage Bangor City, but obviously that didn’t work out Not looking good for Ian Holloway

A lot of folk on this thread are clearly exceptionally transparent with their employer. At the same time they’re considering departing they’re hammering down their manager’s door to keep them in the loop. Either that or they live in cloud cuckoo land.

Any manager is never more than ten games from the sack (you'd hope), so why wouldn't any of them jump ship to the best contract they can get. The fact he didn't take Noreen out for a candle lit dinner first is immaterial and the fact Roland lost his brown stuff with it and won't speak to him puts him on the same level of about half the boardrooms in the division.

Regarding his disastrous stint at Ipswich, I've just checked and he lasted 15 games and only one won. So not too dissimilar to our league record this season
