The broadcaster decided to edit the words 'f****t' and 'sl*t' from the track - released by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl in 1987 - in an apparent bid to avoid causing offence over the festive period. In the updated version, the word 'f****t' is changed to 'haggard' and 'sl*t' is muted. This is the only Xmas song that I (aka The Grinch) can tolerate!

Good to hear. Long overdue these changes. If it could be replicated more widely across society it would save me making any further detentions for public order offences.

There is always commercial radio, maybe even Radio Shrops won't get the message, or I can just dig out my copy and have an entire session of "inappropriate language" songs, **** 'em.

A deliberate attempt by the Mail to "wind up" those of us who sit on the right of centre, politically? If the former, it is mildly amusing, but if it a "wind-up", it does the service of normal political discourse nothing but harm, as it sows discord where none exists, nor should exist. I am almost reduced to *****!!!! ************!!!!!! *****!

With some words it could be right to not instill them into common use by the next generation. For anyone who listens to Radio 2 it's far too late to try and influence them. Probably a bit mutton jeff anyway, certainly deaf to new ideas and ways.

It's the sort of thing that a few years ago would have wound me up and I'd be ranting about PC going mad, now it doesnt bother me. It could be that I've got older and realised it's not a big deal so who really cares or I've just got used to someone being offended by everything and it is the way of the world now.
What I think is ironic is how society had changed, 40/50 years the establishment were banning songs which might offend and society was challenging censorship by saying how out of touch the 'old guard' are, now it is society saying they are offended and want censorship, even if from a different era.

This is more interesting than the usual banning stories because the BBC has taken an oddly nuanced approach to it - words changed on Radio 1, original version on Radio 2 and 6 Music presenters can choose which version they play.
The terms were always meant to be offensive, but in the context of the song. And that's surely the point. These words aren't being used by, say, a presenter or an interviewee or even by singers performing as themselves. They're sung in character by the song's protagonists; a heroin addict and an alcoholic. The song was also written in 1985, and the world was different then.
I'm a firm believer that political correctness is mostly a good thing - punch up, not down. But it shouldn't extend to legitimate artistic representations - when people are acting in character they should be allowed to speak in character and the audience granted the intelligence to appreciate that's what they're doing. I accept that it can be a fine line sometimes and not everyone will get that words are being spoken in character and aren't to be taken literally. But you'd have to be pretty dim to believe that MacGowan and MacColl are speaking as themselves when they sing those words.
Radio 1's got this wrong.

I Was Born On Christmas Day - Saint Etienne with Tim Burgess - is far better than most of them but heard very little. Bob Dylan's 'Christmas In The Heart' album will be played in my house!

It was the uncensored version that was belted out in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special last year.
Some of the commercial radio stations and music channels have played a censored version for years.

Sure every rap song has words blanked out. Kids know they are swearing.
The important thing to remember is....every single one of us will sing it with the correct words!

The important thing to remember is....every single one of us will sing it with the correct words! there was a song last year that had a lot of air play and there was an obvious editing in it, i had to google what it was and the word "pills" had been removed as in pop pills
