that's ridiculous!!!
my dog ate grapes months ago (which are highly poisonous to dogs), they had to give him vomitting drugs and tablets and he stayed in for a few hours, but i'm not even sure that cost a hundred!

Must have been more than just a visit. Any treatment?
Did it require a scan or X-ray? Did you have to leave the dog overnight? Any blood tests or other tests?
Not that any of the above should cost anything like you paid but tell us what was wrong?
Last year we were away in our Motorhome and our poodle became very ill with a vomiting bug. It’s only a titch so to the local vet who gave an anti vomit tablet and said she’d be OK. The poor thing them just threw up all over the vet who decided she needed to stay in on a drip overnight. Picked her up the next day at a cost of about £360.00.
We use medivet (have used 4 different ‘branches’) now as their routine charges are a bit less than most and never had a problem???

Medivet have always been fine for me. Never heard anything negative about them so I’d imagine the charge must be justified one way or another.

If they suspect a foreign body inside and have to operate you could be looking at that kind of money

no foreign bodies, was just tests, a hundred pounds for 6 tablets is a bit dear

Our dog had unexplained vomiting and related dehydration - lots of tests and an overnight stay. Total bill was just over £400. Yours is clearly more expensive, but I guess it depends on the tests and the medication.

Sounds like allergy tests? We’ve got a German Shepherd who’s got allergies we treat Naturally but we’ve been quoted that sort of money to have a series of tests to find out what she’s specifically allergic to. Vets recommend a monthly injection at £170.00 a month which we’ve had to have a couple of times.....
By the way with medivet we’ve always been given the Itemised estimated bill before treatment and have to authorise prior to treatment commencing.

My parrot had some problems digesting its food and was trumping away a couple of weeks ago, and they were kind enough to do the treatments on the house. Sounds like Rixy's been done up like a ukipper.

Suggest you might look at the Code of Practice for Veterinary Surgeons produced by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and in particular the sections on Fees and Estimates . Seems to suggest you should get itemised fees and sufficient information about costs to make an informed decision re approval for treatment to proceed

Something doesn’t add up unless they had to get authority from the insurance company rather than R6ix? And as R6ix says perhaps insurance companies are an easy target.... I suppose it’s a bit like car insurance. I had a knock I was going to get repaired myself at a proper repair shop for just under £900. I decided to claim and the insurance bill was just under £3k

It certainly doesn’t seem right. Even if the insurance company needs an itemised bill I would want one too as I would want to know exactly what had been done to my pet.

The moral of the tale is, if you fancy a pet, consider taking in an elderley relative, no vet's bills, no care home bills and they can have a life. Don't take much excersising and fairly clean around the house. Just a bit demanding sometimes.

Don't take much excersising and fairly clean around the house. Just a bit demanding sometimes. Plus of course when they snuff it you inherit big style with a bit of luck . Helpful Tip : Don’t leave it too late before you help them with their will else you could miss out . Always remember you can’t kick em outside into the garden for a last s**te before they go to bed . They aren’t dogs even though they might like their food mashed up and tend to fart a lot . Apart from that they aren’t a lot of bother if you can put up with them asking the same question a hundred times over . Oh , another thing . Don’t let them anywhere near the tv remote control.. If you do prepare for the neighbors to complain as the noise levels go through the roof .

whilst on the subject of vets, i deliver to a 2 on a daily basis, today there was a old dog lying down outside the one vets on a blanket ( only the vets are permitted in the building during covid) the dogs owners clearly giving it a tearful goodbye before the inevitable, i hate having to go to these to be honest, the amount of times i pass someone looking anxious or worse , i know its life and that but its so sad when you see it happening
