Credit where it's due. 'Hurstball' was only used to see out the last few minutes of a game we were winning. Quite right too. You'd have to be an idiot to do anything else. As I recall, that season was full of entertainment and decent football. Why? Because we had assembled a side that had some very good ball players from defensive areas through to attack - the likes of Godfrey, Nolan, Rodman and Whalley were all very good with the ball and could make things happen. We need similar types of players in similar positions to put together another decent side capable of challenging in the top half of the division. more like last 10 minutes its funny how people remember the games as entertaining, presumably they mean there was a better atmosphere because at the time, what we did was mostly moan blueandamber.proboards.com/thread/95923/attacking-play

And I suspect people remember the games as entertaining because we were challenging for promotion. I could be wrong but that does tend to influence people's viewpoints

I could be wrong but that does tend to influence people's viewpoints the point I was trying to make was that it wasn't like watching Brazil either, not many mentions of how exciting the football is, i'm sure the more time goes by the most some people think it was exactly like that for 45 minutes v bristol rovers it was, but then we it in the corner for the next 45 minutes the fact is if you win games, the atmosphere is usually pleasant and fun, fans go home and quickly forget what happened, and they dont care either, we won

If someone dislikes Ricketts they’ll always be able to find a negative, same as someone who dislikes Hurst.

Barrow fans on their return to the FL. I really haven't been paying enough attention. Barrow? Blimey. What a story that is. Just a certain something about a club that was last seen in the League in 1972 making their way back up. The only club ever voted about of the league to win promotion back, a great storey 👍

Eoin Doyle strongly linked with a move to Bolton. They can't be that skint even though they are under a transfer embargo.

Even more predictable is the reaction of (some) of their fans who are celebrating and telling other fans to stop being so bitter. I wonder how long before it all falls apart and those same fans moan at the Football League for not doing enough and asking for support from other clubs? www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/18571153.town-boss-confirms-doyle-departure-bolton/

Ridiculous state of affairs yet again.

No. The atmosphere did not determine my own perception of the quality of football we played that season. Quality football makes for entertaining football, typically. But I'd be careful of taking a few choice posts from a few choice posters and assume their rants were entirely rational or accurate.
So, I'll say it again - the likes of Henderson, Godfrey, Nolan in particular together with other players such as Whalley, Rodman, Nsiala and Ogogo playing some of the best football of their careers, contrived to create a team under Hurst that played some very entertaining, good quality football. Friends of mine that support Doncaster, Charlton and Rotherham all remarked on STFC being the best team they saw that season.I felt proud about that. So, I refrained to ask whether it could have been the atmosphere rather than the quality of our football that made them think we were the best team.
So, could it be your own inability - and perhaps other posters too - to recognise the difference between good quality, entertaining football and the more humdrum fodder?
