Today marks 70 years since my first attendance at Gay Meadow, a 2 - 2 draw with Gainsborough Trinity in the Midland League and our last season of non league before our election to the Football League.
I was two and a half at the time, my Dad took me, so don’t remember the game. I didn’t know I was there until seeing an entry about it in my Mum’s diary after she died.

The value of diaries. Anybody keeping one these days? Only for appointments. Over the years I've written odd pieces on occasion, mostly when I've been travelling. There isn't a lot but it would take me a while to collate them. That's as close as I get. Anyway, 70 years - quite a landmark that, ST!

Sounds like you should be a candidate for that luxury chair in the East Stand if and when we get next season started!

Any memories of individual players from that match. Started watching two or three years later than you. Just wondered if I would remember any town names from your first game.

Sadly not, I have memories of players from the mid 1950s but nothing from earlier. Of the team that day Jackie Butler joined the back room staff after retiring and was still there in the Arthur Rowley era. Talking of the name Rowley, that was the surname of both ‘keepers in the squad. I don’t know whether they were related but it’s an odd coincidence. The other name that stands out is Frank Griffin who was later transferred to WBA and scored their winning goal in the 1954 Cup Final. I believe Frank played junior football around Shrewsbury for many years after he retired. edit, sorry quoted wrong post, this was meant as an answer to wakemanender.

I've still got a programme from a cup game in those days. Not sure who we played as a mouse has nibbled away the opposition club's name. I remember they were from Yorkshire and we thrashed them. I can still read their team though.

[ I played football against Frank Griffin . He was playing for Meole Brace FC in the West Shropshire League about 1968- 1970 somewhere around there . He was working as caretaker / handyman at Briarfields , Raby Crescent , Belle Vue . Lovely guy was Frank , had some wonderful conversations with him . Jackie a Butler was back room staff at the Meddah with Tommy Seymour . Tommy was John Phillips’ gandfather . John played in goal for Town before going to Villa and Chelsea . Sadly John died last year I think . Wonderful memories of those times at the wonderful Meddah.

Frank Griffin was my player manager at Worthen in 64/65 - our first season in the West SHROPSHIRE League as a newly formed team. His experience was priceless as he led us to silverware in our very first season. I remained friends with Frank and when he passed away I was at his funeral at Worthen Church along with some WBA greats from his era.

I be managed 61 years, Oct 1958 v Gillingham was my first game. I remember Jackie Butler well. He worked in the next office to me at Wrekin District Council in the early 1970,s. Lovely bloke, we had some great chats about the Town.
