Read the following today. Seems to put things in a much better perspective, just wish folks would take it on board rather than the mass media overhype. "I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared. I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19. What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess. I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even imagine? I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession. But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested. Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous. I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing. Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts. Our children will thank us for it." Good to see that even doctors can't use the word reactionary appropriately

Supermarkets starting to ration certain items. A very religious neighbour who has a panic room stocked with food because he has for many years believed the world is coming to an end is starting to stock up with shotgun cartridges because he says people will soon be turning on each other because of panic buying. Meanwhile in the real world.

as with all things this will bring out the best and worst in people. it is important to say that from current data 85% of people infected will get very mild to moderate symproms and many will hardly notice they had it.

Internationally the number of people infected is said to double every six days with 10% of cases requiring hospitalisation. Currently 244 people in the UK have been confirmed. The latest figures I can find for the number of beds in the NHS is 127,000 with an occupancy rate of 88%. How many days before there is no bed capacity in the NHS?

Trouble is, people who aren't panicking about the virus are panicking that those who are panicking about the virus are going out to buy up all the bog roll. And as no one wants to be left with no bog roll, one thing leads to another and here we are. Meanwhile here in Germany, talk about cancelling events where over 1000 people would be in attendance. So I gather that would also include the football. All about slowing down the spread apparently.

The American men’s team EF Pro Cycling have also written to the Union Cycliste Internationale asking to withdraw from all three races, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal. The Dutch women’s team Parkhotel Valkenburg will not be taking part in the Strade Bianche. This week RSC Sport, the organiser of all three Italian races, had insisted they would go ahead.

Apparently both China and S Korea have seen their lowest daily number of new cases since January. Cautiously that this trend will continue.

23513 people tested 278 Cases = 0.0118232%
278 Cases in UK , 3 Deaths so a rate of 0.0107913
And that is Since January 29th so an average day = 7.13 cases per day
Not saying it isn't that serious but in the UK those figures do give a bit of perspective

The problem with the virus is the fact it is very mild and that's where the rub is. Many don't even realise they have got it and therefore can pass the virus easily on to more vulnerable people.

All this working from home is giving me a bit of cabin fever to be honest.

Seasonal flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%, has several vaccines in existence yet still kills 50k people a year in the UK. Your "not very ground breaking" calculation sets it at ten times that, plus there's no vaccine, it's infectious as hell and our health service is already on the ropes from ten years of austerity. What's it going to take for some of you to understand that you need to acknowledge this is a very serious situation and act accordingly? Not saying panic but for Christ's sake stop with this "stiff upper lip", carry on as normal charade, you are quite literally going to end up killing someone that way. It's not infectious as hell. Measles is given an infection rating of 12 to 18. Sars came in about 3 and Coronavirus is at about 2.2 currently.

the one thing i fail to understand is why the goverment have not stoped flights from infected areas and we still dont seem to be screening people who return from northern italy. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8091313/British-skiers-hospitalized-Austria-coronavirus.html"Three British skiers have been hospitalized with coronavirus in Austria after contracting a more aggressive strain of the killer bug, reports suggest. Three men - aged 61, 44 and 49 - had been staying in Italy before going to a busy ski resort in Saalbach in the middle of the winter season." " dr Richard Greil, who is in charge of the quarantine of the three skiers, said that all the cases seen in the region were coming from Italy, which he described as being 'completely out of control." "It is widely speculated that Italy has a stronger variant of the virus - known as the 'L' variant - but there is no concrete evidence for this."
