I used to be a signaller in gobowen signal box, it was quite busy then with the coal yard still in operation , and even Whittington fuel depot and kronospan wood yard were still having trains there wasn't ever anything that ran from Gobowen to Nantmawr. (Oswestry) whilst I worked there and I dont think there has been since I would imagine the whole line, rails, crossings , barriers , and signalling equipment would been renewing so can't even see this as an idea for what would almost certainly run as a loss I dont think it being run by the heritage would even get off the ground, too much cost and H&S these days now a line from Shrews to Stafford would be a positive idea Kronospan at Chirk still has daily freight trains which run through Shrewsbury. The most recent came through at 19:42 this svening. This was listed as Ballantine Bay (South Wales) to Chirk Kronospan and is operated by Colas Rail. Regular trains to Kronospan to keep the fires going? Shrews to Stafford Choo Choo, now that would be good! Does not really have a well served road link and would allow rail passengers to access our 1 hr 15m line to London (which will probably start making stops all the way down and being slower if HS2 ever bypasses Stafford).

Kronospan at Chirk still has daily freight trains which run through Shrewsbury. The most recent came through at 19:42 this svening. This was listed as Ballantine Bay (South Wales) to Chirk Kronospan and is operated by Colas Rail. Regular trains to Kronospan to keep the fires going? Shrews to Stafford Choo Choo, now that would be good! Does not really have a well served road link and would allow rail passengers to access our 1 hr 15m line to London (which will probably start making stops all the way down and being slower if HS2 ever bypasses Stafford).

One of the lines Beeching recommended for closure but the Wilson government reprieved was the Heart of Wales line. Which was a very good thing.

Which was a very good thing. ...and years later when British Rail also wanted to close the line it was the Conservative Minister of Transport, Michael Portillo who refused to let them do it. Good man. Was never a fan of him as a politician but his various "Great Railway Journeys " TV series are superb

The Cambrian coast line avoided Dr Beeching but then came under real threat of closure in the early 70s. Fortunately, a tireless campaign led, by amongst others my English teacher Mr John Rogers saw the line survive and continue to this day.
It is a beautiful scenic line. I hope that one day the regular summer steam working will return.

Should perhaps concentrate on the current ones. Yes, there is going to be a lot on the government's plate taking back franchises from poor operators. (Why can't a transport company liked Arriva or Stagecoach run a railway?)

I hope that one day the regular summer steam working will return. It also came under threat of closure in the early 1980s when it was found that there was a major problem with Barmouth Bridge. Fortunately the bridge was repaired and services resumed fully along the line.

Should perhaps concentrate on the current ones. i fully understand your point of view, i use the trains a lot and the infastructure needs upgrading. in the interview the transport ministers responce to that points was this; www.gov.uk/government/news/new-48-billion-funding-for-britains-railways" £48 Billion on Railway investment to boost reliability and punctuality, for major upgrades and for new, faster, more comfortable trains."

Interesting , back in my day in railway management I was aware of a very high security dead of night freight train that came up from the West Country on its way through to Sellafield carrying a nuclear flask. It as many diversionary routes as possible, eg around Birmingham,and was limited to 50mph but there are areas were it had to use the main line, eg from Galton Junction through the Black Country

Interesting , back in my day in railway management I was aware of a very high security dead of night freight train that came up from the West Country on its way through to Sellafield carrying a nuclear flask. It as many diversionary routes as possible, eg around Birmingham,and was limited to 50mph but there are areas were it had to use the main line, eg from Galton Junction through the Black Country The trains leaving Kronospan have to come down to Shrewsbury, where the loco changes ends and then heads of to the Colas yard at Carlisle via Crewe.

The one good thing about the Tories winning Labour Northern heartland seats is that now they have to do something to try to keep them, reversing old decisions. Until now the only thing the Tories ever brought to the North was mass unemployment.

See that the government controlled "Operator of Last resort" is taking back control of Northern ( a Arriva Company) with the Trans Pennine Express and West Midlands Trains franchises on their last warning. Someone on here recently said that with the tories winning so many normally labour seats in the recent election they now need to sit up and do something for the North of England, EG create jobs, better infrastructure etc. To whoever that was, absolutely correct, spot on
