so they could throw the villa game and avoid playing the big boys in the semis ;-) I've heard that the authorities have launched a doping enquiry into the kids team that Liverpool fielded against Villa, Apparently during the after match checks 3 of them were found to have Calpol in their systems you'll never win anything with kids

Just checked & discovered Man United were the first, and only other, English winners. I’m a United supporter but I’d forgotten about their win almost as soon as it happened so, no, I won’t be sending congrats to Anfield. The competition means very little to me. I prefer to remember the Mancs treating the FA Cup with such disrepect in '99, because the World Club Championship was so important and then coming home early after one win against the mighty South Melbourne
Funny how most people forget about that one. At least Liverpool actually bothered to put out a team (of sorts) against Villa.

you dont remember it too well I certainly didnt, and have just looked it up in 1999 united won the first of their 2 world club champions cups just over a month later the new revamped version meant united had to go and play abroad again at the request of the fa united didnt enter the fa cup , united didnt want to go but the fa insisted suggesting it could jeopardise Englands bit for hosting the 2006 World Cup if they didnt go really I think the fa wanted other sides to have a chance of winning something ;-)

The Mancs won the FA Cup in '99, as part of their unprecedented and unmatched treble! No, the funny thing is how so many people forget the role of the Government and the FA in "persuading" United to withdraw: Tony Banks (Sports Minister): “It is my estimation that a failure by Manchester United to go to the new competition in Brazil – particularly if they were replaced by Bayern Munich – would do irreparable damage to our 2006 campaign,” said Banks. “It is important for Manchester United – as perhaps the world’s most famous club – to hold the standard for England and Europe. These are extraordinary circumstances and it is an extraordinary decision to allow them to be exempt from next year’s FA Cup. But it is for one season and I do hope Manchester United supporters will realise the significance of what they and Manchester United are being asked to do.”Arch-brexiteer Kate Hoey succeeded Banks and was supportive of United at first: “I think it is absolutely imperative that Manchester United play in the FA Cup,” she said. “The people I really criticise are the FA. The FA can still put matters right by saying to Manchester United they must play in the FA Cup.”Then she blamed United: “I am just amazed that they have actually treated their supporters in what I would say was quite a shabby way,”
United Chairman Martin Edwards had a different take on it: “For a new sports minister to suddenly enter the arena at this late stage and tell us we are treating our supporters shabbily and should go back in the FA Cup is a disgrace. I suggest she does her homework and I suggest the government gets its act together, because we did this in support of the last sports minister.”
In his book, FA Chairman David Davies later wrote: “Supporting the Club World Championship was vital to keep FIFA sweet. That message was reinforced by FIFA executive Chuck Blazer, who made it clear that if United didn’t represent Europe in FIFA’s major club competition it would be impossible for the FA even to dream of hosting 2006. United were completely torn, agonising over the decision. Right from the start Fergie was shocked about even the thought of forsaking the Cup for a season. His respect for the Cup ran deep – that famous Wembley victory over Crystal Palace in 1990 may even have saved Fergie’s job. I did feel I was betraying the FA Cup by giving United the option of withdrawal. Even though I’d spent my life besotted with the Cup, I couldn’t see any other way out. Even now, nobody has presented a way out we didn’t consider.”Before everyone bends the knee to the principled scousers, they might wonder whether Liverpool would have done the same as United in 2000, under the kind of government and FA pressure that United faced. I don't believe there's a club in England that wouldn't have done the same. Liverpool were under no pressure to withdraw from either competition this season, other than the number of fixtures they faced. There is simply no valid comparison to be made of the two clubs' circumstances and only the most biased United haters could fail to see that. But I do wonder how anyone could think it more respectful of the League Cup to short change paying spectators and put out a team of kids at Villa.

Not a United hater, it's just that I don't get the hatred of Man Utd fans for Liverpool (or vice versa), it's not like you're actual rivals these days is it? Well no more than we're Herefords or Wrexhams rivals anyway

Liverpool should be deducted points for disrespecting the carabao/league cup, because after all it is part of the English league/cup season, and should be honoured, and should be known to everybody.they should of sent a weakened team to play in the club championship, and there strongest team to play in the league cup.i can bet your bottom dollar, that any other lesser team doing that would be deducted points, and that is nailed on.honour your own competitions first----which is part of the agreements before the season starts I'm sure

Well no more than we're Herefords or Wrexhams rivals anyway I’m sure United (still the only team to take a point off Liverpool this season) will be rivalling Liverpool long before we’re regularly facing Hereford or Wrexham! I don’t hate Liverpool, I wanted them to beat Real Madrid - they let me down.

With the Xmas / New Year / FA Cup games coming up it wasnt possible to play it for probably 4 weeks so the two parties have sort of come to an agreement that it had to be played when it was but with a reserve side. In that scenario its hardly disrespecting the competition but just no other sensible solution. Liverpool haters get over it.

A reminder of what a completely corrupt bunch FIFA were (are). All that bending over backwards for them, not to mention the gifts and forcing Prince William into glad handing them and still no World Cup. Qatar no doubt a more worthy football nation than us. BTW, the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester predates football and was originally about trade.

BTW didn't realise that the town of Ellesmere Port, on the Wirral side of the Mersey was originally developed as the port for our Shropshire town of Ellesmere. Both towns were to be linked by a canal ! ...and then someone invented railways

May as well just give them the Premiership now. Seems they are just playing with the 2nd best team at the minute so what chance does the rest have.
Who is out there to stop them now?

I'd like to see this Liverpool team face the United of 99/00, Arsenal of 02/03 or Chelsea of 04/05, they'd be some great games.
This Liverpool side is a CB away from being the best Premier League team in history for me.

This Liverpool side is a CB away from being the best Premier League team in history for me. Nobody ever sees a dynasty coming. I predict they will win the next 2 or 3 titles following on from this one, at which point they almost certainly will be rated the best ever. Trust a German manager to create a side as ruthlessly efficient as this. Only comparable side I can think.of is Wenger's unbeatables. That said, opposition has been want, frankly.

Very happy for people to be discussing Liverpool on a thread marked "Liverpool".
I thought they were outstanding last night, so, so ruthless.
Alexander Arnold looks unplayable just now, and him and Henderson seem to have a telepathic thing for finding each other. That can only be good for the world cup. Chilwell is no slouch either, so that is the full backs covered.

That's quite something for a right back.

Certainly don't consider myself to be a Liverpool "gloater" but my post footer gives me a right to comment as I was born and lived in the city until i was 6.
I would hope that most neutrals would accept that the win last night was an absolute masterclass and reduced Leicester to looking like a very ordinary team, when in fact they are normally a very exciting and effective team

Did you watch the match?...when was the last time the top placed team went to the second placed team and beat them 4-0 on their own patch?
