been looking at stats of town games i have been to since around 1991 .on database looking at teams we played against, on the day the names on opposition team sheet meant little but now there were some big names we saw play who went on to higher and better things, one example we played orient in 2002 and villa manager played against us that day or our 4-1 win v bournmouth whos line up included darren anderton. Gylfi Sigurdsson played for us that day also.

Wayne Rooney springs to mind with his efforts and failure to get the better of Pete Wilding.

Loads of big names on opposition team sheets in the 1980s.
Keegan, Waddle and Beardsley. Brooking, Lineker, Wright. The list is endless.

I’m pretty sure I saw John Barnes down the meadow in 81 would help if someone had a list of the teams
Anyway Watford won 2-0 and if it was him I remember him trying to claim a goal that was hammered in and literally skimmed his hair on the way in with him knowing nothing about it , I remember him shout , that’s mine Might not have been him but bit late as I’ve told it many times now

Not sure whether I saw him, memory hazy, but I do remember seeing his brother Len playing for Stockport in 1967. I also recall future top 'keepers Alex Stepney and Pat Jennings turning out for Millwall and Watford respectively before they moved to greater things. Many top players at the Meadow in the time our reserves were in the Central League, Arsenal once had 7 Internationals in their team and Spurs had England No 9 Bobby Smith on a comeback after injury. Our reserves had Gordon Sketch marking him, it was like 2 bull elephants fighting over a bun.

a pal to Anfield yesterday for the game, (He's a lifelong fan, never been before!) had him out on the pitch helping the groundstaff for the duration and he stood alongside Kenny Dalgleish and Jason McAteer before the game in front of the tunnel. He walked amongst Firmino, Mane and Salah as we completed the repairs at the end of half time. He had a smile on him like a cheshire cat In my time (30 years) as a Groundsman at various clubs and venues, I think I've met many of the biggest names in the game, Gerry Francis, Trevor Francis, Terry Venables, Graham Taylor, Alex Ferguson and Glen Hoddle spring to mind. Perhaps more pertinent to Town fans is Ian Atkins, who was the manager when I worked at Northampton Town, 95-96?

I’m pretty sure that I saw a player by the name of John Atyeo playing for Bristol City ? against Town at the Meddah. The name sticks in my memory because it’s unusual for a start and secondly my father told me that he was an England 🏴 International .
I’m thinking possibly late 50’s to mid 60’s. Would that be right ?

It's very likely Atyeo played at Gay Meadow as Bristol City were on the same division as us for several seasons.
I recall controversy over his England selection as he got the nod instead of Arthur Rowley who was a better player. However, there were a lot of politics in selection on those days as it was done by a committee of club chairmen and not the England manager.

Been supporting the Town since the mid 70s. To mention a few who all scored against us if my memory is correct:
Billy Bonds
'Pop' Robson
Peter Taylor
Gordon Strachan.

Remember seeing England centre forward at the time Alan Peacock, when we came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 Fa cup, lost replay 5-0 Boro were a good old second division side then, think about 1962.

Remember watching Fulham in the 80's with George Best, Rodney Marsh and Bobby Moore, although past their best 3 fantastic players.

Remember the friendly against West Ham at the Meadow just after England had won the World Cup. Bobby Moore and Martyn Peters played. I think Moore played in midfield and scored a few against us. Also remember Brooking destroying us at Upton Park in the league but we also won there just before they won the FA Cup. In matches not involving the Town I saw Best, Law and Charlton play for Man Utd at Wolves several times, also saw Jimmy Greaves playing for Spurs there and the great Gordon Banks playing for Stoke there. Saving the best for last I saw the greatest of all Pele play for Santos against Stoke in a friendly - I think it was the late sixties just before Brazil won the Mexico World Cup with the best forward line of all time.

Was Tostao playing ? A superb footballer who looked as if he shouldn’t be anywhere near a football pitch . Remember him playing in the 1970’s World Cup in Mexico I believe he went on to become a Doctor .

Remember him playing in the 1970’s World Cup in Mexico I believe he went on to become a Doctor . Dont think Tostao ever played for Santos but he was very skillful and a good dribbler. The other three (apart from the incomparable Pele) in that famous Brazil 1970 front five were Gerson, Jairzinho and Rivellino - all great players and all very different. Oh for the old days when teams played a front five - we get excited nowadays if we see two upfront.
