Broad's wicket - bat gets stuck behind his pad!! Broad has become an utter embarrassment as a batsman. Deserves to be relegated to Number 11.

This is really frustrating... batsmen getting a start and then getting out. Question for everyone (follows a comment I've seen on the BBC site) Is Joe Root still a world class batsman? Not since his elevation to the captaincy. The stats speak for themselves. His average was comfortably over the 50s before succeeding Cook in 2017. Since 2017, he's struggled to reach an average of 40. I agree. I would take the captaincy off him tomorrow if I could but sadly that's not going to happen.

The concern used to be over England not getting to 400 often enough, these days we struggle to get to 300. Root averages 42.4 as captain, he averaged 52.4 before he was appointed. I guess it depends on what you call world class, I don't think any other England batter in the time that Root has been captain has averaged more, so he's still well worth his place in the side as a batter.

I honestly feel that we would see a return to the Joe Root of old if he stepped down as captain. I'm also beginning to think that way now too. I was fairly happy with him as captain going into the winter tours but some of his captaincy against New Zealand and in this current series has been very strange and difficult to understand. Too often there doesn't appear to be a consistent approach, tactics or strategy. To be fair that might not all be down to him, it's difficult to know who is driving the team tactics. I'd like Burns to take over at some point, he's the obvious choice having captained Surrey for a while now. We do need to get Root back to the batsman he was too, with so many inexperienced batsmen in the side now we really need the experienced players to stand up, lead and be consistent.

It's a real shame that Moeen has dropped out of Test Cricket, otherwise I'd put him forward as a future England Captain.
Anyone who has witnessed his captaincy of Worcestershire, albeit mostly in the shorter form of the game, would have been very impressed. And he has the experience of Test Cricket that Burns lacks.
But whatever the selectors do, don't give it to Stokes. He has more than enough on his plate already.

Moeen is 33 this summer, that's not in his favour when it comes to captaincy. It would only be considered a short-term appointment. Burns, if he stays in the side, will have played around 20 tests by the end of this summer. If he is established in the side by then as a batter then that will be about the right time for him to be considered. Others have been given the job after far fewer tests, notably Mike Brearley.

The bowlers are doing their best to dig us out of the hole dug by the batters, good battling performance in the field so far.

Denly c Pretorius b Nortje 31.
Yet another England batsman who, having got into the 30s, gets himself out. Skied a ball down to fine leg.
101/2.

Another good day for England, we're now well in control of this game. Great to see Sibley get his first big score and hopefully he'll convert it into his first century in the morning.
News on Burns isn't good, he'll probably miss the tour to Sri Lanka in March with Jennings a likely replacement if he does. No decision has been made on whether to replace Burns for the remainder of the South Africa series.

WICKET - Stokes c Van der Dussen b Maharaj 72 (Eng 310-5) "It was magnificent while it lasted. Ben Stokes looks for the rope once again, slapping Keshav Maharaj straight, but this one doesn't have enough mustard on it. Rassie van der Dussen takes the catch at long-on.
Stokes leaves to a standing ovation from the away fans. Superb entertainment."
WICKET - Pope b Rabada 3 (Eng 315-6) "This obviously isn't great for Ollie Pope, but, in the grand scheme of things, England won't mind a bit of variable bounce. This one from Kagiso Rabada keeps a touch low with Pope, cutting when the ball is probably too close for the shot, dragging on.
The game is moving on.."
WICKET - Buttler c De Kock b Nortje 23 (Eng 356-7)

8:43 WICKET - Maharaj lbw Anderson 2 (SA 129-3)
"Absolutely stone dead. England complete their first task of the day, removing the night**tchman. James Anderson is reversing the old ball and this one hoops back at Keshav Maharaj, trapping him on the crease eight in front.
Maharaj doesn't even contemplate the review. Seven more needed..."
10:04 WICKET - Du Plessis c Denly b Bess 19 (SA 164-4)
"Huge moment!
A massive wicket for England, gifted to them by the South Africa skipper. Faf du Plessis aims a sweep at Dom Bess, but he's not over the ball and finds Joe Denly at a strange square leg/mid-wicket position. From nothing, England have an opening before the second new ball."

11.30 WICKET - Malan c Stokes b Curran 84 (SA 171-5)
"BIG.
That is a peach from Sam Curran and it needed to be to remove Pieter Malan from such a supreme knock. Curran angles it across from over the wicket, it lifts up at Malan, who plays at it but the ball deflects away higher up the bat than he wanted. Ben Stokes gets down superbly to take a fine low catch.
Well played, Malan. Could that start a flurry for England?"
