England's last 7 wickets...contributed just 39 runs. Says it all really.
There has been illness in the camp prior to the start of this test match so I suppose we should cut England some slack. There are some tired and rusty players out there that's for sure.

'It is not the England captaincy that is hindering the development of fast bowlers, spinners or batsman with the attitude and technique to bat for a long time. It is the structure of the domestic system which has been ruined over the last decade or so by a Board with more interest in the bank balance than the scorecard'. George Dobell.

A decent effort from Burns and Sibley today, it was a shame Sibley got out in such a soft way after doing all the hard work, but Burns looked very good.
South Africa obviously still big favourites but if we can get through the first session tomorrow in good shape you never know, it's been that sort of year for England.

That was a really good effort by Burns and Sibley today. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Burns looks proper gravy, doesn't he? Shame it took Cook's retirement before we got an opener who's looked like he belongs for longer than half a series.

Awful shot by Bairstow. 10 runs in the match. Pope to come straight back into the side.

Root now gone to a familiar dismissal for him. Fishing outside the off stump to one he could have left alone.

And yet England might have won had they restricted SA's lead to 250 or so.
Having said that, they don't deserve to win.

Another batting collapse.

A semi decent batting display in first innings and would have won that. Need to change the captain, and I’m not convinced by Silverwood as coach at all.

Numbers 9 to 11 produce absolutely nothing other than adding to the late order batting collapse. Broad's batting is an embarrassment. No Jack Leach's there.
As for Buttler, he's been dining out on his white ball exploits for ages. One test century in 68 innings and an average of 33.

7/39 in the 1st innings. 7/64 in the 2nd innings.

The ECB are warning to the idea of 4 day test matches as a way of reducing player workloads. I do worry about the future of test cricket once the ECB start favouring such an option.

Rory Burns having a scan on his ankle after injuring it playing football. They never learn. This happened to Bairstow, and Twohig of Worcs was out for the whole season by doing something similar.

Could be a Crawley/Sibley or More likely Denly Sibley opening pair with Crawley Root and Pope next up!

Australia have had yet another good day, closing on 283 for 3 with Labuschagne scoring another test hundred. What a find he's turned out to be!

This is really frustrating...
batsmen getting a start and then getting out.
Question for everyone (follows a comment I've seen on the BBC site)
Is Joe Root still a world class batsman?

262/9. Far from good enough on that pitch.

Not since his elevation to the captaincy. The stats speak for themselves. His average was comfortably over the 50s before succeeding Cook in 2017. Since 2017, he's struggled to reach an average of 40.
