It would appear so, BBC say lorry thought to have come from Bulgaria entering at Holyhead on Saturday.

How has a lorry got from Bulgaria to Dublin without entering the UK though?
The guy must have actually been picking up the people in Dublin or the UK on his way back from Ireland. Kind of flys in the face of the "migrants are desperate to get in" line, this looks like he was smuggling people out and then ditched them when it looked like he might be caught.
I think there will be more to this story than the simple "migrants" tale when all the facts are known.

An appalling discovery and a genuinely shocking story. The traumatic scenes do not bear thinking about.
When all is said and done though, this is yet more blood on the hands of the "Welcome Refugees" losers in Britain (including of course on this Forum). They have sought to normalise/encourage illegal immigration, asserting there are "No Borders". I won't name and shame the person who described the typical desperate sea-crossing and beach-landing of illegal immigrants as a "non-event".
Such people need to take a very long hard look at themselves in the mirror about their catastrophically poor judgement, not least in the light of the discoveries in Essex today. Naturally they won't because they laughably self-identity as being "Progressives", always believing they know better.
The news media are reporting that their country of origin of the deceased persons was Bulgaria. The mystery right now is why on earth were they leaving Bulgaria, a safe (if horrendously corrupt) country, crossing umpteen other safe EU countries to get into Britain in this manner? My understanding is that since 2014, Romanians and Bulgarians have enjoyed Freedom of Movement within the EU.
What exactly was the incentive, and how does Britain and the rest of the sane world act to PREVENT a repeat of this?

Playing devil's advocate here, the No Borders advocates would argue that a good way to prevent a similar tragedy would be to open borders so people weren't obliged to risk their lives in the back of a refrigerated truck to get to the developed world. Another option would be to work with partner countries to stabilise the middle east, or invest heavily in improving the living standards of people in the developing world (including ending the West's addiction to cheap goods manufactured by sweatshop labour in Asia) so that escaping to the West becomes a less attractive prospect.

I don't think anyone on this board has sought to normalise/encourage illegal immigration. Perhaps you could give accurate chapter and verse instead of making political capital out of tragedy.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-50150070Seamus Leheny, Northern Ireland policy manager for the Freight Transport Association, said if the lorry had come from Bulgaria, getting into Britain via Holyhead was an "unorthodox route". He added with reports of increased security checks at Dover and Calais "it might be seen as an easier way to get in by going from Cherbourg or Roscoff, over to Rosslare, then up the road to Dublin".
---
Since the completion of a fence on the Bulgaria-Turkey border, most asylum-seekers trying to reach Western Europe do so hidden in trucks. One part of the smugglers' network hands them on to others. They are then kept in "safe" houses in Bulgaria, usually close to the Serbian or Romanian borders, to be put into new trucks bound for Western Europe. Since 2016, there have been fewer and fewer ways to enter Western Europe legally - hence the desperation of those on the road.
Despite Turkey's incursion into Syria, there has been no spike in official numbers, which continue to fall. In the first nine months of this year, 1,742 applied for asylum in Bulgaria. 132 were granted asylum, 212 were granted humanitarian status, and 932 were refused. In 2018, 2,536 applied, in 2017, 3,700, and in 2016, 19,480.

Thanks for that link. Interesting that closed borders are a factor in this. The UN implemented this refugeesmigrants.un.org/migration-compactNow they need to act.

Essex Police said the trailer arrived via ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium, into Purfleet on the River Thames. The ship docked in the Thurrock area shortly after 00:30, the force said. It is believed the container and lorry then left the port together about 35 minutes later.
Truck registered in Bulgaria to a company owned by an Irish citizen.

Gut feeling is that the young driver knew little about the immigrants being hidden inside the vehicle, (if he is the owner driver of the vehicle however that might be different). It appears the stories of entry into the UK via Holyhead are incorrect, there are no European freight ferry services to my knowledge that sail around the UK to dock there. It is an absolute minefield for HGV drivers as they approach the channel ports on mainland Europe and the wannabe stowaways are now looking to hide on vehicles many, many miles away from the ports. No matter how vigilant the driver is it’s almost impossible to feel 100% secure in the knowledge that there are no illegal stowaways hidden within/on the vehicle. An absolute tragic discovery that highlights the desperation of those trying to reach our shores

An absolutely appalling event on our shores, even more tragic that this can be happening in the 21st century.

One hell of a trek in the back of the lorry!!

The driver is always responsible for checking his load and ultimately that load becomes his responsibility - seems the young driver collected what should’ve been a sealed unit/container/refrigerated trailer from Purfleet where it was probably a roll on roll off trailer shipped from Zeebrugge. It appears that the 39 stowaways would have been in transit before the Irish driver collected the trailer.
Thank goodness my days of HGV driving on the continent are over - the pitfalls associated with European haulage are just huge nowadays

A time for respect for 39 people's lives.
Reasons and political comment are for later.

Hope there's no scapegoating, and the real people responsible for this tragedy, are punished very severely.nothing can bring these poor souls back, but those who orchestrated this, need long, long jail sentences.
