Agree on whalley being our best player he definitely needs to start. Even if it's in CM he is to good to be on the bench. SR has to find a place for him or we as fans might get a bit annoyed 🤔 Has to play number 10 for me. Get Norburn (when he’s back fit) and McCormick sitting behind him. I suspect that won’t happen though.

I thought the back three and 'keeper all had very good games, although O'Leary needs to work on his distribution, as I counted at least four of his kicks that went straight to the Villa keeper. Morison was winning most of his headers against premiership defenders, so should be able to best most of the defences in League 1, we just need someone who can read his intentions better than Okenabirhie did. Vincleot didn't appear up to speed in the first twenty minutes or so, but when he did catch up he looked as if he could be a decent player. Their goal came from arguably their only clear cut chance of the game and a mistake by a tiring Walker, but he had been given the runaround by premiership players for over an hour, so I can forgive him his error.
A couple of times when Villa had corners or freekicks there were players fighting for everything and putting their bodies on the line to protect our goal and that was great to see. I still can't for the life of me understand why there is no out-ball when we're facing a corner though, especially when a team like Villa will just pick up any clearance and send it straight back into the box. All in all a decent performance against a team that has single players worth more than our whole squads lifetime transfer fees.
One bizarre thing about yesterday was the club shop being closed. Nearly 10,000 people coming to a game and they didn't think it might be a good idea to open up for a couple of hours. Mental.

Ricketts pleased with the overall performance and level of fitnesss, early days but two fans who sat by said it was a major improvment on the Newport performance. the defence had to work hard and so no wonder some of them looked a bit tierd in the last ten minutes but over all i though they did well Vincelot cut out a number of passes and seemed to be in the holding midfielder role as did walker who had the odd venture up the park. i appreciate we played a premership team but midfield looked a bit lightweight and was by passed rather easily. early days for McCormick but had a few nice touches and a good free kick.
the two forwards were not on the same wavelength and i hope they work out how to play with each other, morrison won a lot of header made a number of flick on's but most were not picked up. just wondering were the goals are going to come from as we lacked a clinical edge.

After last season I was fairly impressed with what I saw yesterday. Some very good performances, especially the keeper and the on loan Chelsea lad. I am hoping that Morrison with all his experience - and he did ok for me - can pass on something to Fejiri who yesterday looked below Div 1 standard. Somehow the manager has to find a starting place for Whalley who is definitely our danger man when running at defenders. Pity about the club fall-out with Grant though as he would have been in my starting XI. Early days yet but judging by that display, even though it was 'supposed' to be a friendly, I am looking forward to the season with positivity. COYB

They played much better than at Ludlow. I came away from Ludlow really concerned, but v Villa they played much better. Goalkeeper played well I thought and he didn't have much of a chance leading to the goal, tho he did get a foot on it. Ro-Shaun Williams looks like he's going to get a few cards. Pierre looked threatening at times, Giles, walker and McCormick looked good too, so I'm hoping this is going to be a decent team going forward. i do think it's a stronger side than what we had last season. Agree a bit light in midfield but defence performed well and looks like we have a few attacking threats. So came away positive after this game. Can't make Cheltenham but going to the Dundee match then its all systems go. COYB

As it stands, the positions that pick themselves are:
GK - O'Leary RCB - Williams CB - Pierre LCB - Ebanks-Landell LWB - Giles ST - Morrison ST - Okenhibirie
I think most other positions are up for grabs. Don't they even Ricketts knows who his midfield three will be in two weeks time.

Quite encouraged by that. Only a friendly of course & the TV pictures were often unhelpful (Villa's cameraman was far too ready to zoom in on whoever had the ball) but looked ok, as far as I could see.
A few players will need to up their pace for the real games but that's why friendlies are played. Defence looked like a pretty solid unit & O'Leary was very good. Giles is very promising - enjoyed his run burning past the Villa winger. I think he and McCormick look capable of delivering a more consistent standard from set pieces. Good ball in from Love too, that Okenabirhie might have scored from.
Not overly concerned that we haven't scored yet but we need to put that right in the last two friendlies. Some good signs from the front two and Whalley looked sharp when he came on. I really don't think he has to be played only as a winger - he can offer plenty in a different role.
A couple more signings, no more injuries and 2 or 3 goals in the next two games and I'll feel quite chipper about the season ahead!

I agree that Whalley has to start. We've got to shoe-horn him in somewhere, he's too good for the bench.
I'd like to see him playing number 10 with McCormick and Norburn sitting deeper, but I think that would be too offensive for Ricketts. I think he'll use him as an impact sub.

Morrison looks awful! slow uninterested I thought he had a touch of grant holt about him had you said the same about fejiri I would have agreed Agreed Whalley looked so much better when brought on. On Morison you can win all the headers you like, but unless its directed to a player or a a runner are on the same wave length then they look poor. Just what i saw. It looks like people disagree but that's whats this board is all about!

A lot more encouraging than the Newport game, still feel a certain someone currently training with the youth team could improve things in the middle ?

It's close run so far but I'd say walker is currently leading the predicted scapegoat of the season award, closely followed by Vincelot. Former favourite for this trophy Beckles has seen his odds pushed out as legions of oracle's seek to write off Walkers chances before a competive ball has been kicked.
Other contenders to join the fray for this prestigious trophy include Morison, Love, Golborne and Edwards.

Whalley always likely to win us a penalty if he is in the team. Came very close against Villa but just outside box.

this is a virtualy new team , they look more organised than last year all players need game time to get a shared understanding.whilst i thought the midfield looked a bit on the light side ,i was plesantly suprised by Vincelot he will be a better player if he can add some physicality to his game(he is the holding midfielder) whilst Walker did venture forward i think he needs to be more confident as he seemed a bit lost at times. the longer the team play the system i hope the more confident they will feel.
we do need another forward

I'd expect an 11th to 16th finish from what i've seen so far. A couple more quality additions and i believe this team could flirt with 7th-10th with good fortune.

I'd like us to play 442 set up tomorrow night. With our first choice midfield injured it would be a chance for Whalley and Eisa to start with Vincelot and McCormick in the middle. Personally I don't like playing with 3 central defenders mainly as the wingbacks don't seem able to add enough in attack while we're still conceding goals in defence. It will never happen of course.

The game yesterday definitely seemed positive and we're in a far better position than we were this time last year. I feel there is a slight hint of optimism knocking about!
I'm not gonna make any wild predictions, but strengthen the midfield a little and there is no reason we can't give it a good go this season!
