I know we like to pass on things TV, movie and book wise here and B&A so just thought I'd give this a mention (as I've not heard too much about it). I've always had a bit of a morbid fascination with the events at Chernobyl and so for me it was always going to be a must watch but even so, judging by the first episode I'd really recommend taking time out to watch it if you can. Early doors yet of course but it looks superbly made. Only downer is I think its just available for those with Sky. But if you can see it...

Have watched the first two episodes so far, and the way the people of Pripyat were treated was brutal!! The dangers and threats to the rest of Europe could have been catastrophic if the scientists were ignored?!
It is a compelling watch with great attention to detail. Hopefully the remainder is as captivating?

Saw the first episode, but have yet to watch the second. Looks fascinating and tragic in equal measure.

Never buy organic blueberries from the Ukraine (podcast on the guardian about Chernobyl) - fascinating about the events and the aftermath. So am very interested in the hbo show.

Enjoying this immensely and also enjoying the Looming Tower on BBC which is about the events leading to 9/11, which makes the Americans look like the officials at Chernobyl.

Emily Watson is a good actress.
HBO produce some top quality TV. Pity you need to subscribe to Sky to watch it π

It's gripping stuff, really first class TV drama looking at it purely from an entertainment perspective.
As a historical account, I don't know enough about the event to have a strong view. I remember it happening and being shocked by it. What I don't recall is feeling that we in the UK were immediately at risk which, the series suggests, was very much the case. The frightening thought is that it could have been continuously damaging people ever since, without them being at all aware, and be responsible for deaths yet to happen.
Even more frightening is the possibility of a recurrence or something similar, like Fukushima in 2012. Mismanagement and misinformation seem to be a common theme in such man-made disasters and I don't see us ever freeing ourselves from those things. If anything, we're becoming more susceptible, with the "lie now, few people bother later" approach infesting our public life.
Back to Chernobyl: Apparently there's an official tour you can take, although I'm not sure how close to the power station it gets. The brave (or foolhardy), can take an unofficial tour that involves going through the perimeter wire, hiking 40km, sleeping in the abandoned apartment buildings at nearby Pripyat and, for the really intrepid, free-climbing the massive and obsolete radar array close to the site for a better view.
The most positive aspect of all this is that, as ever, nature doesn't stop - it gradually takes over again even where humans have made the worst foul-ups.

Watched the first episode and found it very entertaining. However, did find it a little odd that they all used English accents. Very strange to hear a Ukrainian nuclear physicist with a Burnley accent! π

Watched the first two episodes, itβs fascinating stuff.
Regarding visiting the place nowadays, Guy Martin made a good account of it in his most recent book
