I'm learning as a new poster on here, that telford utd ground is referred to as the ducks head.has this always been the case, even when it was wellington town that played there,or is it the telford new town thing, that causes the animosity?I had a relative that came from wellington, born there 1907 and left in the 1930's.never got to ask her what she thought about the changes, that came about with the new town of telford.bet she wouldn't have approved though.

after building work on and around the ground I think some drainage got broke or blocked, probably around 2004/5 ish every time a cloud appeared in the sky the pitch would get waterlogged
we did have a telford fan on here for a while who hitched up with Jules , a town fan and member on here, and he had a duck for his avatar he was a good laugh to be fair ( can't think of his name, I'm sure someone will remember ) I think telford had a cup tie v Millwall that was called off many times before it got played, I actually went with a few from here when it got played and stood with the Millwall fans
but I guess it was around then that ducks head or probably more often duck shed was born

Quite laughably it got moved to the old Gay Meadow and was played only about 48 hours after the river Severn had burst its banks and had been all over the pitch. Although the old girl was prone to the flooding river it was quite easy I’m told to predict how quickly the pitch would be playable going by the peak forecasts for the river.

Worth mentioning in case the OP isn’t aware that the ground used to be called The Bucks Head when Wellington Town became Telford United (now A.F.C. Telford after they went bust) after the pub in one corner if the ground ( now a pizza delivery outlet) and is now officially called ‘The New Bucks Head’ hence ‘Ducks Head’ a play on words for the reasons above....They’re also known as ‘The Bucks’ and the badge has a buck on it www.telfordunited.com/info.aspx?ID=2&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

Think it was the England non league side (now known as England ‘C’) that were due to play Italy at the Bucks Head which got switched from there to Gay Meadow at very short notice due to the constant drainage problems they were experiencing at the time. This was in the season when Salop were in the Conference so there were at least a couple of Salop players in the England squad if memory serves me right... Luke Rodgers was definitely one, think Jake Sedgemore was in there too and possibly one or two others but can’t really remember?

I've tried googling it but I can't find any record of it anywhere. I'm interested in finding out if any of the Italy players ever became full internationals. It would be great if someone still had a teamsheet/programme from the game.

It would be interesting to discover if any of that Italy side who played that night would go on to ‘make it big’, I still find it amusing that Gerard Pique once played for Man United reserves at Gay Meadow in the Central League (and Joe Hart played in the same match).
